Noni
This fruit has been eaten and used for medicine in Polynesia for over 2,000 years. The leaves, stems, seeds, roots, and fruit were all used traditionally to treat various aliments including malaria, vitamin A deficiency, cuts, wounds, abscesses, boils, intestinal worms, fever and countless others. The leaves make a healing tea or were used as a poultice. The fruit on its own can be eaten or used as a poultice as well.
Current scientific research may validate Polynesia’s belief that this fruit is extremely medicinal. Various phytochemicals occur naturally in Noni and are probably responsible for this plants’ medicinal power. It is said that phytochemicals can restrict tumor growth and regress the proliferative nature of cancer. One example is scopoletin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial and anti-tumor properties. Noni also contains other powerful antioxidants and health benefiting nutrients like xeronine, which can assist healthy cell structure and regeneration. It also contains selenium, which supports healthy skin and terpine, which helps the body to detoxify itself. Studies also suggest that there is a polysaccharide compound (6-D-lucopyranose penta-acetate) contained in Noni that has the power to increase your immune systems’ power by increasing the killing power of the white blood cells. This is good news because white blood cells don’t just fight diseases and cancer, they defend us from infection, bacteria, viruses, parasites and all kinds of other foreign invaders.
If you have ever smelled Noni you can understand why it would be a good choice for medicine and not as a tasty fruit to snack on. It’s sometimes referred to as the “cheese fruit” because of it’s striking pungent smell that resembles stinky cheese. I prefer the powdered form compared to the juice. Noni juice is pasteurized and a lot of the nutrients are lost because of it. When purchasing Noni powder I suggest only buying wild crafted and organic, that way quality can be insured.
