In Congress, there seems to be a phenomenon that can best be described by the rock singer Tom Petty as "No, I won't back down". Americans are very frustrated to the point that public opinion polls are stating that 60% of them want to replace every one who is in the Legislative branch (http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/10/20903531-nbcwsj-poll-60-pe...).
The behaviour of out elected representatives seems more like a, well you know the word, contest than law-making sessions. As a result, our country is in the throes of a fiscal crisis that has left many government agencies shu. down, workers furloughed and our economy struggling. The threat of a default on paying our debt is causing concern and disgust.
While everyone and anyone involved is adamantly professing very specific opinions and stances about what's in the beat interests of the country, many Americans may be wondering why they don't consider their obstructive behavior itself! Certainly these people can read and watch the news and see what effect they are having on thw very countrypeople they are supposed to be serving.
Maybe it'a something else. Perhaps their behaviour is not so motivated by patriotism as it is by...macho?
While there are a significant amount of the female gender serving, much if the rhetoric is coming from the male of the species. A lot of men love to be men. In fact, the more a man feels like he's not a man (http://www.world-science.net/othernews/050806_mascfrm.htm), the more he will arrive to act like one. He will try to act, that is, like the stereorypical macho man.
As each political side asserts its stance, it gets challenges by the other side. The more it gets challenged, the more the challenged side has to assert itself in order to maintain what they are as their dignity and self-respect. On it goes. It is probably fortunate
that we haven't seen any fist fights yet, but as thus escalates, who knows to where it will lead.
Perhaps the best way to understand this behaviour is to get to the core of it. Exhibiting excessive macho behavior is compensation for feelings if inadequacy, hence a news to compensate. Consider that these are people who are abposition of power and celebrity. They can not rake a chance that they will be seen as weak by giving in and be humiliated, thus losing their prominence, and their power and their masculinity.
So it would seem that the more they are pushed, the mire they will push back. Perhaps a dose of reality would help.
That dose of reality may come from a study that shows that these manly men are behaving so for what might be an embarrassing reason. That reason is the heightened levels if estrogen, the female hormone (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6252257/Macho-behaviour-...). Ultimately, then, it would seem that these politicians are not being so macho as they are really having PMS.
The other answer, of course, is for these hypermasculine "boys" to grow up and develop some self-esteem. This way they can throw away their egos and deal with the facts. And get our country up and running as it's supposed to.
