The Yuletide Season is upon us, the time of year when we come together with friends and family to stave off seasonal depression and fatten up for the coming winter months. Humanity has long marked the return of the sun with the winter solstice celebrations. The names of the solstice holidays have evolved over time, but the message remains the same, family, friends, and food.
This is also the time of year when Fox “News” tries to make every True Christian™ think that every mention of a non-christian specific holiday is somehow an attack on their religious freedom. The folks at Fox get really upset anytime someone tries to wish them a Happy Holidays because to them there is only one holiday, Christmas. The right wingers in the United States really hate inclusiveness. Including others is the same as excluding them, as far as they seem to be concerned. And it makes utterly no sense.
First of all let’s address their ridiculous war cry, “Keep the Christ in Christmas.” Anyone whose education involved more than just Christian theology will know that the winter holiday dates back much further than Christianity. Christ was forcibly inserted into a pagan holiday to create Christmas, so that argument comes from pure ignorance. In fact, right-wing Christians in early America refused to celebrate Christmas because of its pagan origins.
Not a single Christmas tradition originated with Christmas. So when the right-wing gets all upset about the greeting ‘Happy Holidays’ or the erection of a ‘Holiday Tree’ in the town square what they are actually doing is putting their ignorance on display for the world. Winter celebrations belong to everyone, what you choose to call it really doesn’t matter.
There is only one guaranteed outcome if the Christian conservatives wish to continue this war against secularism. The word “Christmas” will lose it’s meaning and become secularized. That’s just common sense. What happens when you force people to say something they don’t mean? It loses its meaning, that’s what happens. So Merry Christmas from this secular humanist. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
