The Loyal Nine: part one

The Loyal Nine was the Boston group that preceded the more famous Sons of Liberty. Like the Sons of Liberty, the Loyal Nine were a clandestine political group that enflamed public opinion of British law while keeping their hands relatively clean. They protested British policies that they found immoral, unfair or unlawful. Their names are known now, but they had to stay relatively hidden to avoid charges like treason that could have ended in imprisonment or execution.

The Loyal Nine was established in early November of 1765 when the much-protested Stamp Act was enacted in the colonies. Their movements and actions are partly unknown, like the Sons of Liberty. However, some of their deeds and all of their members are known to history. Primary among their doings was inciting anger at the Stamp Act and its proponents. This was done by spreading pamphlets and by organizing angry mobs. It makes sense that they would keep their identities hidden and essentially remain in the background of these mobs. Had they been publicly associated with these mobs, they would have been in big trouble.
