The Loyal Nine: Conclusion

Some of the gatherings of the Loyal Nine are known to have taken place at the Liberty Tree, which is strongly associated with the Sons of Liberty, but was originally associated with the Loyal Nine. There, the effigies of proponents of the Stamp Act were hanged in protest. In some instances, these "hangings" led to angry mobs gathering at officials houses. Several politicians' homes were ransacked and severely damaged by these mobs.

The nine members of the Loyal Nine, whose names are far less famous than their brothers in the Sons of Liberty, were Henry Bass, Joseph Field, John Smith, Thomas Chase, John Avery, Stephen Cleverly, Benjamin Edes, George Trott and Thomas Crafts. We know that they were still meeting by January of 1766 and that they were shortly joined by more famous patriots like Samuel Adams as the group evolved into the Sons of Liberty. Several of the original members remained in the Sons of Liberty until the beginning of the American Revolution. It is possible that most or all of them did, but neither group left much to go by.

Nearly half of the Loyal Nine members are known to have taken part in the Boston Tea Party, but it is suspected that more of them did. The names of the Boston Tea Party perpetrators were covered up by necessity, so it is unlikely that a list of which Sons of Liberty and Loyal Nine members were involved will ever be completely accurate.
