Star Wars: Celebration V seems to be the thing Steve Sansweet gets asked the most about lately. I know because as far as emails from readers of this space, It's the thing I get asked about most lately, and I'm not even officially affiliated with Lucasfilm in any way. I got to chat with Sansweet briefly about it at Dragon*Con and he seemed to genuinely wish he had more information.
Some seem to think he's holding out on the information about the date and place, waiting to make some sort of big announcement, but there really are no bigger or better places to do it than at Comic-Con or Dragon*Con.
Instead, the matter is more about licensing. Sansweet explained that no deal has been signed with the company who will be organizing the event with Lucasfilm. It doesn't seem as though a final decision even on what company to sell the license to has even been made. And it makes sense that no decision can be made about the time and place if the organizers haven't even been chosen. And if those organizers are paying as much in licensing fees as I suspect they are, they're going to want to have a hand in choosing a venue that has the best chance of returning a significant gain on their significant investment.
Having said that, here is what we do know so far:
- Celebration V will take place next summer (2010) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.
- No Place or time has been set, though there are two things Sansweet said this weekend to remember:
- A) They've inked deals like this as late as 6 months out, and:
- B) It will be on the "right half of the country" (which, according to Sansweet, means that it will be somewhere between Chicago and the Atlantic.)
So, that's all the news on Celebration V that exists. Sansweet said that as soon as there is more, it will be made available instantly on www.StarWars.com. As soon as an announcement is made, trust that you'll be able to read about it here first.
