The Gnostic Gospels are a collection of thirteen ancient books containing over fifty texts from the early centuries of the Christian era. They include a collection of early Christian gospels, known as the Gnostic Gospels They were found in Nag Hammad, Egypt in 1945. A large number of them were thought to be destroyed, when the leaders were putting together what would be allowed in the Bible. Some of the Gnostic Gospels may include some traditions even older than the gospels of the New Testament. Like the New Testament some of the books tell of Jesus and his disciples, but there are major differences.
It is believed that it was Emperor Constantine who decided what should be taught about Christianity. It became a law that having the Gnostic Gospels books in you possession was a criminal offense. Copies of books were burned and destroyed. Thankfully some of them were saved, possibly by a monk who hid them in a jar in a cave, about 1,600 years ago.
The first Gnostic Gospel we will look at is, The Gospel of Thomas. There are a 114 verses in Thomas. Here are the ones that are not in the Bible. Most of his writings were close to the New Testament so these are not in your Bible. These answers and sayings are straight from Jesus…according to the Gospels,
Okay, the first is one of my favorites.
Jesus said, “If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. If you do not have that within you, what you do not have within you [will] kill you.”
Does that mean that it is not your Church, your Bible, your anything…but it is only YOU who can bring forth God? Only YOU who can bring forth the truths?
Jesus said, “Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you…’
What did Jesus mean? Well sight means, ‘mental perception.’ It also means, ‘to look carefully in a certain direction.’ What direction? How about, Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.’ You look ‘within’ your own self.
Jesus said, “If your leaders say to you, ‘Look, the (Father’s) kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is within you and it is outside you.’
Well, do you understand? Jesus himself basically said NOT to look to your leaders…Are they not the ones who do TELL you what’s true? To them. ‘Rather, the kingdom is within you and it is outside you.’ The kingdom is there when you are within…thought of IT.
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘There is light within a man of light, and he lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness.
Light means, ‘awareness and understanding.’ Darkness, means, ‘lacking or having very little light.’ Lacking ‘awareness and understanding.’ There is a light (awareness and understanding) within man and his light (awareness and understanding) lights the whole world. That makes sense. To know God aright, you would need ‘awareness.’ You would need ‘understanding’
Jesus said, “I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained. “I am the light (awareness & understanding) that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all is attained.’
There is not one single thing in your world that you did not cause…by thinking it. If you do not think…you have no experience. So was that what Jesus was saying… that you do need more ‘awareness’ of what’s within you? And did Jesus want us to let go of the understanding that we have been taught by the religious leaders, who need our money? And have put the fear of God in all the people….so to control them? Was it this understanding Jesus wanted us to know? Jesus wanted us to only go ‘within.’
There you have it. Jesus, himself is telling you that the leaders and the scribes, those men who made copies of manuscripts ‘have taken the keys of knowledge and hidden them.‘ They knew that if men had ‘awareness and understanding,’ they would not be able to be controlled by anyone.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the solitary and elect, for you will find the kingdom. For you are from it, and to it you will return.”
Okay, was this just another way Jesus was telling you, that you need to be alone? Because that’s what ‘solitary’ means. Alone. Not in a Church. ‘ You can only get your understanding ‘within’ you. And no one can come ‘within’ you. And you can not go ‘within‘ another.
Jesus said, “Let one who has found the world, and has become wealthy, renounce the world.”And last, Jesus said, ‘Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not die.’
The dictionary tells you that ‘interpretation’ is to, ’to bring out.’ It also means to, ‘provide the meaning’. Was Jesus telling us that no one but ourselves can ‘provide the meanings’ of his words? Was he telling us that it would then be YOU who must go directly ‘within’ to God/Consciousness because God only can ‘provide the meanings’ and then YOU could ‘bring out the meaning….’ And…know the truth.
So did Jesus mean that each one of us must find our own interpretations? Maybe, because if you don’t know, and understand yourself, what good is it. Example, 2+2=4…you can know that, what will it help if you don’t understand why its so?
Jesus said, “I am not your teacher.’ Maybe he said that because, man is not to be taught. Man is to find TRUTH ‘within’ his own being.
Jesus said, “Have you found the beginning, then, that you are looking for the end? You see, the end will be where the beginning is. Congratulations to the one who stands at the beginning: that one will know the end and will not taste death.”
Isn’t the beginning of everything…Consciousness? God? That’s a good one. Think about it.
Jesus said, “Congratulations to the one who came into being before coming into being. If you become my disciples and pay attention to my sayings,’
Again, Isn’t the beginning of everything…Consciousness? God?
Jesus said, “I disclose my mysteries to those who are worthy of my mysteries. A mystery is something ‘unexplained.’ And ‘worthy’ is “to turn.’ Did Jesus mean that for those who would ‘turn within,’ the ‘mysteries’ would be fully ‘explained?
Jesus said, “Those who know all, but are lacking in themselves, are utterly lacking.”
Who is it that you learned about God from? Those ‘who know all? All those religious leaders?
Jesus said, “How miserable is the body that depends on a body, and how miserable is the soul that depends on these two.” Man only has to depend on the God ‘within’ his self.
Jesus said, “The heavens and the earth will roll up in your presence, and whoever is living from the living one will not see death.” Isn’t the ‘living one’ God/Consciousness?
The whole Gnostic Gospels documentary is 90 min.
