The Lost Art of Manners

Listen up, kids. “Mind your manners” How many times have heard this phrase? I know that I heard it a LOT in my house growing up. (I had two brothers that did not always mind their manners at times.) Parents tell their children to mind their manners in order for them to be polite and respectful in today’s society However, Michael Winn’s book, Henry Burp-Mind Your Manners is a rhyming book for children that teaches manners in a fun way. Poor Henry Burp. He was an ordinary child who enjoyed doing things tha boys like to do, including “building forts, and of course, swinging on swings.” (1). However, Henry had a small problem. Where ever he went, bad manners seemed to follow. He did not have good hygiene habits because of manner, and his Mom caught poor Henry blowing bubbles in his milk glass. Henry’s manners also got him in touble at school. His teacher often did not let him go out and play with the other kids at recess. One day, Henry was sitting inside when the school janitor walks by. Can he solve Henry’s bad manners problem before he lands in more hot water?

Manners are a lot art in today’s fast-paced technological world. Oftentimes, individuals are quick to blame the parents, but I think children have too many technical outlets. It’s gotten to the point hat manners become lost in phone texting. Sometimes children text their parents from upstairs Mom, get me a soda. They forget to say the two magic words, please, and thank-you more often than not. We all need a book such as, Henry Burp, Mind Your Manners to teach children that manners are important no matter what. Mr. Winn has done a great job in getting his point across without being too hash on the younger generation. Parents can find this book for their kids at Amazon.com or Boks A Million in Tulsa. Happy reading!
