The Lord will protect you

2 Thessalonians 3:3; But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Paul and his companions were experiencing persecution by "wicked and evil men" as they traveled city to city preaching the gospel and in need of spiritual support to continue. Paul was encountering people who did not have faith as he implied by saying, "not all have faith". Just as Paul needed and received the protection from God, we too need and receive the protection of God.

This is a subtle reminder that we live in a world full of people who do not have faith, and act in ways that tempt, provoke or that may even be dangerous to our welfare. Sometimes we even have to deal with church members who exhibit a lack of faith in just this same way.

How sad that is, but it is reality.

There are many times when we need protection from people who have a lack of faith. Sometimes on a daily basis, but most of are blessed with supportive families and consistent incomes. In other words, we may not have to worry about running into the sort of person Paul had to deal with on a daily basis.

Though it does happen, and all of us need to be "fixed" to something, or held firm so we do not get tossed around in the tornado of life. Establish means, to fix, set fast, or make fast. Tying a boat to a dock so it does not float away is a good example. Metaphorically speaking, God is going to establish us.

Who does Paul say does this "fixing"?

The Lord.

Why or how?

He is faithful. If there is anyone we can trust to keep us tied to a safe dock while the storms of the sea of life crash against us, it is Him.

Not only does God fix us to a safe place, but He guards us, even when we feel we are on our own, open and vulnerable. This is an active part of His faith. The word means to guard or protect, in the active sense.

God is constantly watching over us … after He ties us to a safe place.
