Fake it ‘til you make it…weave it ‘til you achieve it…sew it if you can’t grow it! Slogans like these drive the hair multi-million dollar hair extensions business. One Texas Pastor is driving weave out, like a foul spirit!
No...this is unbeWEAVEable!!!
Waco Texas Pastor A.J. Aamir has disparaged the laity and leadership of the Resurrecting Faith to not wear hair weave. This is a sore subject in the black community and churchgoers, hair professionals and bloggers are all (hair) glued to the internet today following this further developing story.
Pastor Aamir has taken flack for his comments. In an interview with AmericaPreachers.com he likes the use of hair extensions to low self-esteem, saying:
Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying. -A. J. Aamir
Message board commenters have pulled out the shears and have ‘cut and colored’ the Pastor’s comments. Some have labeled the Pastor’s church a cult and have further disparaged attendance at the Waco church.
Wash n’ rinse
In a typical viral reaction, the Pastor’s comments have not all been properly processed. Pastor Aamir further expounds:
I lead a church where our members are struggling financially. I mean really struggling. “Yet, a 26 year old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head. NO. I will not be quiet about this. -A.J. Aamir
You missed a spot!
Perhaps Pastor Aamir should teach on stewardship instead of sending female parishioners into weave withdrawals. Perhaps he could "weave" in a lecture or two about current social norms and "beauty" school those wig wearers he deems to be of such low self-esteem. This Pastor has made a "PERManent" decision about something so temporary as hairstlyes. While it's not all bad, it's not all good either. Things are sure to get 'hairy' in Waco, and the follicular fallout is sure to grow if churches take issue at other hairstyles such as dreadlocks in their various forms.
The latest edition of “O” Magazine was dubbed “Let’s Talk About Hair” and has Oprah Winfrey on the cover in a larger than life wig.
Weeks ago, social media was sent into a tail spin and spontaneously combusted when Beyonce posted a picture with a pixie cut as opposed to her tailored tresses. Can believers ascribe to principles that dictate they are only as pretty/handsome as their hairstyle?
I Am Not My Hair, I don’t think!
Most women will say that their hair doesn’t define them, yet they will still use hair extensions. Men are no different, refusing to surrender to baldness at any age. Maybe the issue isn’t hair or hair length at all. Maybe the issue is personal perception and fashion sense. In church, believers are encouraged to come in their Sunday best but in Waco, Pastor Aamir wants you to leave synthetic hair out of the conversation! Whether you agree or disagree, this commentary is hair raising to say the least!!
Long hair don’t care. What kind of mess is that? I don’t want my members so focused on what’s on their heads and not IN their heads...! -A.J. Aamir
