As of Aug. 21, 2013 the box office total for “The Lone Ranger” has climbed to a massive world wide total of $217,807,876. A lot has happened since the release of the critically maligned western reboot. According to many Hollywood insiders & critics the American “Western” hardly ever makes money at the Foreign box office. They all however underestimated the star power of Johnny Depp. Most of the money receipts have come from Foreign countries totaling $130,100,000. The U.S. domestic box office returns have stalled at $87,707,876. “Ranger” stars Johnny Depp as Tonto who is the Native American sidekick to Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger.
Financial editor David Lieberman reported for the blog “Deadline Hollywood” Aug. 6, 2013 on “The Lone Ranger” & got a quote from CFO Jay Rasulo who - “Just told analysts that the company is 'disappointed' in the film’s performance and likely will take a charge of anywhere from $160 to $190 million next quarter. The company isn’t ready to be more specific because the film is only open in 40% of its markets; it hits Japan in September. But CEO Bob Iger says he hasn’t lost faith in making expensive tentpole films, even though there has been a lot said about the risk and we certainly can attest to that given what happened to - The Lone Ranger.”
According to the official website of “Box Office Mojo” the western is exploding in Foreign countries. Here are the top 5 grosses from around the world. “Russia” with $15,719,062. “Japan” with $15,661,704. “Australia” with $9,593,341. “Mexico” with $9,954,595. “Germany” with $6,913,593. U.S. critics hit the Internet with much hate over the film's rumored $250,000,000 budget long before the western stopped filming. Many wanted it to fail before it even hit movie theaters.
Native American activists decried Johnny Depp portraying Tonto when they felt a more real native actor should play that character. Depp had always claimed that he carries Tribal Indian blood however small the percentage. The big question is if “Ranger” didn't have Depp would a lesser known native actor bring film audiences into theaters? The obvious answer would be “no” because Depp's name is known around the world. No Native American actor has matched his popular status.
The estimated budget for “Ranger” is $215 million & if the box office receipts are true the film made back a huge portion of its' money. Disney has yet to announce the release of the western on DVD or Blu-Ray. Families that have not seen the movie in theaters will bring in at least $25 million more from DVD rentals. If Disney already writes down $190 million as a next quarter loss. Where does the now $217 million go? If the film goes into the black after DVD sales. What next? Has Disney lost that much money? Questions to ponder, but it seems that “The Lone Ranger” will break even no matter how you look at it.
