When Marcus Medical Spa in Redondo Beach sent me an invitation to their last event January 30th to learn about a skin tightening treatment called Ultherapy, they didn't have to ask ME twice. Always eager to learn about the latest and greatest procedures and treatments in order to share, I BEE-LINED it over to 1815 Via El Prado in Redondo for the scoop.

Arriving to a packed event and not even two seconds in the door, Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Keith Marcus himself (often seen showcasing his expertise on THE DOCTORS TV Show) greeted me warmly and even set me up with a glass of wine! Impressive :)

I was ushered into room where a friendly and knowledgable Ultherapy representative showed an educational slide-show presentation to enthusiastic guests, all very interested in learning how to get a little lift WITHOUT going under the knife.

If you've ever considered a brow lift or facelift but want something convenient and non-invasive, or if your neck has a case of the wild turkey sags or even the domestic turkey sags, Ultherapy might be just the thing for you!

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin (where collagen lives) that is addressed in cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows the Ultherapy technician to actually see the layers of tissue to target during treatment and ensure the energy is deposited precisely to where it will be most effective.

A hand piece is used to deliver tiny deposits of focused ultrasound energy at just the right depth below the skin. Your body responds to this energy by creating more collagen, so Ultherapy actually works from the inside out to gradually lift and tighten over time.

Unlike surgery, there's no downtime, no foreign substances, no radical change; just a healthy revving-up on the inside for a natural, noticeable effect on the outside that appears gradually.

Marcus Medical has been using Ultherapy for about 7 months now -- the BEST part is that they have the latest and greatest machine, which I heard is WAY LESS painful than the first generation machine. I spoke with one woman there who told me she could not bear the original machine's treatment, even with a numbing cream applied to her face.

So, what does it feel like? I got to lay in a treatment room chair and experience Ultherapy for myself. Mind you, it was not a full treatment, which can be a 60-90 minute in-office procedure, but rather a few (10) pulses, or "lines" of treatment, applied at one depth and then a deeper depth right under my chin - basically a little "get your feet wet" treatment to see what it feels like.

After a conductor gel is placed on skin to prep it, the technician places the handset on your face, all the while looking at the monitor, which can SEE the layers of your skin (so cool!). I IMMEDIATELY asked how my collagen was looking. The tech replied, "Average." YIPPEE for ME!

The actual sensation of Ultherapy at work is hard to describe - it felt like a warm, pulsating, almost tingling feeling. When the tech had the ultrasound go a little deeper, it DID become a bit uncomfortable to take 10 pulses but I stuck it out! Afterwards, I was indeed a little tender under the chin, but just by pushing my fingers into untreated areas of the skin, I could tell that the treated area was smoother and tighter. The tenderness lasted only a couple of days.

For patients who get a full treatment (and you can target that treatment to brows, or neck or whatever), results will continue to unfold over the course of 2-3 months and some patients have reported continued improvement for up to 6 months, including lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and on the brow.

As for WHERE to get Ultherapy, I'd highly recommend Marcus Medical. Many of the people there were already patients of Dr. Marcus, and spoke VERY highly of him, the facility and their treatments there. And like I said, better to go to someone who has an experienced team and a newer machine, for the most comfortable experience.

Marcus Medical is located at 1815 Via El Prado, Suite 102, Redondo Beach, CL 90277 and can be reached at (310) 316-1400. Sure they offer facials, Ulthera treatments, medical grade peels, microdermabrasion, waxing, injectables and laser and body treatments, BUT Marcus Medical Spa stands apart in that it also offers surgical solutions and cosmetic dentistry.

You can book an appointment online.

As you can see from the slide show, it's a lovely facility and I can tell you from first-hand experience it's an extremely friendly environment with very welcoming staff!

Marcus Medical is now carrying Zo Skin Health and Zo Medical products by Dr. Obagi. The Invisapeel Intensive Resurfacing Peel feels like velvet going on and the Offects Exfoliatng Polish is an intense, ultra-fine scrub chock-full of anti-oxidants to increase skin turnover for a cleaner, smoother, more even-toned complexion. Purchase it at Marcus Medical next time you're there.

If you are looking for a lift, here's a lift in SPIRITS….
