“On Labor Day,” House Minority Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tweeted Saturday, “we renew our resolve to build a future that ensures a full day’s pay for an honest day’s work & equal opportunity for all.”
On Friday, she tweeted that “Congress must #raisethewage to ensure basic economic security for all.”
During his Feb. 14 State of the Union address -- amid blaming everyone else for his economic failures over the past five years and ticking off a list of new costly proposals he again promised “should not raise the deficit by a single dime” -- President Barack Obama called on Congress to raise the minimum wage to $9 per hour.
“This single step would raise the incomes of millions of working families,” he assured. “It could mean the difference between groceries or the food bank; rent or eviction; scraping by or finally getting ahead.”
And a whole lot of folks out there would probably need less help from government.
"Increases to the minimum wage are well-intentioned but they do more harm than good," USA Today quoted Nicole Kaeding -- a policy analyst for the pro-business Americans For Prosperity -- saying July 9.
The people with low-paying jobs have fewer skills and are priced out of the market when you increase the minimum wage.
According to research by Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee Jeff Sessions, the number of Americans on welfare have increased from 97 million to 107 million since Obama took office and the number of Americans on food stamps has risen by more than 14 million.
On Aug. 29, McClatchy reported that “teen employment has stayed anchored around record lows” for the “fourth consecutive summer.”
The same holds true for the unemployment rates for Hispanics and African Americans.
“If you raise the minimum wage,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told CNS News the day after Obama’s speech, “the inevitable effect will be” that “young people will lose their jobs or not be able to get their first jobs” and unemployment among Hispanics, and African Americans “will go up.”
In other words, raising the minimum wage would lead to more people needing more – not “less” – “help from government.”
Then again, as Walter E. Williams noted for News Busters Aug. 26, “progressives' agenda calls for not only excuse-making but also dependency.
As explained June 27 by The Empowerment Network, Kudzu, "brought here with the best of intentions" -- imported to the United States from Japan in 1911 in an effort to control erosion and restore nitrogen-depleted soil -- "turned out to be not such a great idea after all."
In the warmly moist climate of the American Southeast it has run rampant, over-growing forests, fields, and buildings at the rate of 100 feet a year and more. Today the kudzu invasion is a serious problem throughout the region. If you live in the Southeast, you’ve doubtless observed amorphous vine-covered lumps that vaguely resemble automobiles and buildings. That’s kudzu, and it is out of control.
Let’s face it.
When it comes to the liberal agenda, it’s all kudzu.
In addition to Pelosi’s call to “renew our resolve” to raise the minimum wage, she tweeted that -- because an Aug. 19 survey by Elle Magazine, in a purely coincidental partnership with the progressive agenda pushers at uber-liberal John Podesta’s Center for American Progress and just happened to show “need for economic agenda for women” just prior the first official Women’s Equality Day, which Obama did “hereby proclaim” as the official day where “the people of the United States” where henceforth called upon “to celebrate the achievements of women and recommit to realizing gender equality in this country” on Aug. 26, 2012 -- we should “rededicate ourselves to unleashing the potential of women because when women succeed, America succeeds.”
To accomplish this, liberals want to pass yet another Fair Pay Act bill.
Currently, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, private employers with 100 or more employees must submit reports to the government disclosing “employee data by race, ethnicity, sex, and job classification.”
But liberals want to force every employer “that has 25 or more employees on any date during the first or second year after the effective date of this paragraph, or 15 or more employees on any date during any subsequent year after such second year” to file a report with federal government “that discloses the wage rates paid to employees” as well as “the sex, race, and national origin of employees.”
“But this law will not create equal pay,” Sabrina L. Schaeffer – the Executive Director of the Independent Women's Forum – explained for US News May 4, 2012, .
“It will expand the definition of ‘wage discrimination,’ make it easier to file class-action lawsuits, and open businesses up to greater litigation and uncertainty—all of which would be devastating to job creation. Ultimately, this bill will hurt women, who will become far more costly to employ.”
So what if Obama paid his female White House staffers less than his male staffers in 2012, and in 2011 and paid his female campaign staffer less than his male campaign staffers as an Illinois senator clawing his way toward the White House in 2008.
“The Family and Medical Leave Act requires companies with more than 50 employees to give three months of leave to new mothers,” the Elle-CAP survey complained, “but it doesn't stipulate that women be paid.”
So what if a study by the Congressional Research Service – and a study by MIT’s Jonathan Gruber -- concluded that the additional costs of mandatory maternity leave would drive down wages, particularly for women?
So what if increasing costs of “employing a demographically identifiable group” would discourage employers from hiring women of child-bearing age and add them to the 780,000 women who have already joined the unemployment lines since Obama assumed office?
“When women succeed, America succeeds!”
It sounds good, doesn’t it? Then again, controlling soil erosion and restoring nitrogen-depleted soil sounded like a good reason to import kudzu.
Look at Obamacare.
While liberals love to seize upon every shooting death as an excuse to push another legislative effort to strangle Second Amendment rights, the only thing such laws accomplish is to create a larger number of potential victims by disarming law abiding citizens while criminals – who, as Examiner noted May 2, don’t acquire their guns through legal channels in the first place – arm themselves to the teeth.
As Front Page Magazine’s Daniel Greenfield noted of the nation’s firearm murder statistics in January, the cities “with the most restrictive gun control laws” have “the highest crime rates.”
As reported Dec. 15, 2012 by The Washington Post, Connecticut has some of the nation's strictest gun laws.
Those laws didn't "make America safer" for “20 children and six educators” at Newtown Elementary School.
John R. Lott -- an author, college professor and one of the nation's leading gun experts -- told Newsmax in December 2012 that gun-free zones become “a magnet” for deranged killers who hope to become famous by running up a big body count.
Then there’s green energy.
While Obama pumps billions of taxpayer dollars into wind, solar and electric car money pits, he continues his all-out effort to bankrupt the coal industry – which supplies 57 percent of the nation’s electricity -- and even acknowledged that his “energy plan” would cause electricity costs to “necessarily skyrocket.”
To save the planet, Obama’s pals in the Environmental Protection Agency have systematically imposed thousands of new regulations, which are simultaneously choking small business to death, raising food prices and driving the cost of a gallon of gas further into the ozone layer.
Even the liberal effort to force people to bring their own re-useable shopping bags created bad consequences.
“Thanks to laws in several major cities banning the use of plastic carryout bags in retail stores,” The Daily Caller reported July 24, “there has been a spike in shoplifting incidents over the past couple years.”
“Growing at a rate of up to one foot per day,” American Forests explains, “kudzu covers nearly a quarter million acres of southern forests, according to the Forest Service’s best estimate.”
“It’s a destructive force in slow motion,” says James Miller of the Forest Service’s southern research station.
“Obama considers the destruction of the American economy an acceptable casualty of war in his quest to implement his social agenda,” Lloyd Marcus observed for American Thinker during Obama’s reelection campaign on March 1, 2012. “To each according to his needs.”
Ironically, it would be another liberal -- who once “worked with the Democratic party in Georgia” and currently uses Blog Talk Radio to promote the progressive agenda – who would think that using “Kudzu Vine” as a Facebook moniker was a stroke of brilliance.
