The legendary Chita Rivera comes to Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts November 6

Mark this date on your calendar: November 6, 2010! One of the greatest Broadway theater grand dames, Chita Rivera will be in town on that date to headline the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts La Gran Fiesta. Rivera will perform a special All American Songbook, accompanied by a six-piece band, in the Virginia G. Piper Theater.

Singer, actor and dancer Chita Rivera rose to fame with her electrifying performance as Anita in the original company of West Side Story. And the rest is history! Now a Broadway legend, Rivera has earned two Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical and countless other accolades. She became the first Hispanic woman to receive the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, and, in 2009, President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2005, Rivera starred in the Broadway and touring productions of The Dancer’s Life, a dazzling musical celebrating her spectacular career.

In 1952, Rivera accompanied a friend to the audition for the musical Call Me Madam and ended up winning the role herself. She followed this by landing roles in other Broadway productions such as Guys and Dolls and Can-Can. In 1957, she was cast in the role which was destined to make her a Broadway star, Anita in West Side Story.
