The Legacy of Retiring Milpitas Superintendent

April 8, 2011

Milpitas is a sub-urban city of around 70,000 people, but there aren’t many prominent names that pop out in the minds of residents. Besides mayors and realtors publicizing for their campaign, residents are not familiar with their public leaders. But for anyone who has been involved with the Milpitas Unified School District or with the local community/PTA, they will know Dr. Karl Black.

Dr. Black has devoted his entire career in education beginning as a teacher in Oak Grove School in 1976. He joined MUSD 14 years ago serving as assistant superintendent of operations and then assistant superintendent of educational services, finally becoming superintendent 8 years ago.

He was influential in pushing the passage of Measure B in 2010 that will fund the school district and prevent cuts to the staff and teachers. As superintendent, he spearheaded the district’s solar energy program, in partnership with Chevron Energy Solutions, that put solar panels on parking rooftops generating 75% of the district electricity need. Additionally, during his career the district’s API score has increased, signaling better education was delivered by the schools.

As a student who has met him in person, he is best described as approachable and friendly, as well as a person whom a conversation can be started on any topic. He is an active attendant in school rallies, inspirational in student club speeches, and energetic in local community events. He is not the school administrator who has something to hide from the students, but the administrator who is definitely going to solve grievances.

Dr. Black also served as President of the Milpitas Rotary Club just a few years ago. As a Rotary member, he is actively engaged with the community through charities and volunteering.

Marsha Grilli, President of the school district, highlights his career legacy to include his open-door environment, lack of labor grievances, and financial savvy.

As of March 8th 2011, he has publicly announced his retirement. Best wishes to him for a happy retirement.
