The left discovers libertarianism in Dallas

News from the liberterrain…

Where do libertarians come from?

Conventional wisdom on both the political left and right, as well as amongst libertarians themselves, has long held that most converts to libertarianism come from the right.

But John Jay Myers, the Dallas Libertarian Party’s perpetual motion machine, reanimated that old libertarian spark of civil liberties and equality before the law during a talk he gave Saturday night at the College of Complexities to a gathering that he describes as a "mostly left leaning group."

Myers’ speech was called "Why the War on Terror is a War FOR Terror" and presented a libertarian-eye-view of American foreign policy.

While Myers mentioned the Libertarian Party and its philosophy several times during his speech his focus was on foreign policy.

But to his surprise, Myers told the Dallas Libertarian Examiner, during the question and answer session "I did not get any questions about foreign policy. Everyone wanted to know more about the Libertarian Party."

After responding to questions for "about 30 minutes" the moderator finally stepped in and suggested that Myers return and speak about the party itself.

Myers response was, "I would but I don't think as many people would show up."

"At that point," Myers said, "they all raised their hands as having strong interest."

After the event was over Myers reported," I had four people tell me that they were now voting Libertarian, and one very old gentleman in an Air Force hat told me that he would meet me any time on any corner to help spread the message."

"Freedom," Myers concluded, "is popular."

Part 1 of his Q&A session can be seen here and Parts 1, 2, and 3 are posted at Myers' YouTube Channel, clearsky24.

FYI, The College of Complexes is not a brick and ivy institution but is a forum without membership, open to the public, and run by volunteers that features different speakers on different issues at different places around the country. Myers spoke at Barbec's Restaurant in Garland on Saturday night.

While there is no announced place or time for a follow-up "Libertarian Party only" speech his "War For Terror" speech can still be heard live.

"I am giving it again Thursday night at the University of North Texas," Myers said.

Those who understand politics know that libertarianism does, indeed, appeal to both left and right. It is a mistake to reach out, as some do, only to one narrow segment of the electorate/populace.

For some of us old Libertarian Party activists all I can say is "It's about time."
