When "Fifty Shades of Grey," a novel by E.L. James, was released in 2011, it took the world by storm. Since its release, it has sold over 50 million copies and been translated into 52 languages. With figures like that, a screen version of "Fifty Shades of Grey" was almost certain, and now, true to expectations, filming is chugging full speed ahead despite a few challenges and setbacks. The following are a few things the average movie lover might not know about the current state of the film in the studio.
A Date to Save
Talk of a movie adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" started up soon after the book met widespread success. Because of popular interest, the film is under a lot of examination from the press and casual viewers, so it is easy for it to seem like the movie is taking a while to complete. However, filming began as recently as January 2014, so its 2015 projected release date is quite reasonable. The kicker is that the film is slated for release on Valentine's Day, which makes it a fun date option for couples looking to add a little spice to their relationship.
Who Is Playing Christian Grey?
Avid followers of the movie's filming already know the actor slated to star as Christian Grey, the wealthy young entrepreneur who turns Anastasia Steele's world upside down. However, those who follow developments more casually are likely unable to name the star playing him because of some confusion with the selection process. Initially, English actor Charlie Hunnam was set to star as Christian Grey, but scheduling conflicts with his starring role in "Sons of Anarchy" forced him to withdraw from the film. After a brief interim period of uncertainty, Irish actor Jamie Dornan was chosen for the role. Prior to landing the role, he was relatively unknown.
Dakota Johnson's Fit for the Role
With all the hubbub surrounding the role of Christian Grey, it is easy to overlook the female lead, Anastasia Steele. However, doing so would be a mistake, as she is arguably the most interesting character in the "Fifty Shades" trilogy of novels. Dakota Johnson was cast for the role and is much more well-known than her male counterpart. She starred in hit films, such as "21 Jump Street" and "The Social Network." The role of Steele is a tricky one, and Johnson must play Anastasia Steele as she transforms from a wide-eyed and innocent girl into a woman in control of her sexuality and romantic destiny, all while pleasing fans of the novel.
Fortunately, Johnson sounds confident in her ability to play the role and take on its sexual aspects. She said that she "[doesn't] have any problem doing anything. The secret is I have no shame." It looks like her presence on the screen should be a titillating one. However, she also appears in tune with the emotional aspects of her character. In an interview with Elle magazine, Johnson said that, "Reading the book, I found myself more interested in the ways they were breaking each other down emotionally than the sex scenes...I think there's a part of a woman that wants to be the thing that breaks a man down."
E.L. James' Opinion
E.L. James, the author of the "Fifty Shades" trilogy upon which the film is based, appears very happy with the way filming is progressing, a fact that bodes well for die-hard fans of her novels. She remarked that while she was disappointed to lose Charlie Hunnam to scheduling conflicts, she is nonetheless very happy with Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and enjoys his relatively unknown nature. Since she lacks direct oversight for "Fifty Shades of Grey," she is terrified of her fans being disappointed with the film; however, her blessing of the film thus far is a great sign.
Filmed on Location
Fortunately for those fans who wish to see "Fifty Shades of Grey" adhere to the important details of the novel, it is being filmed on location in Vancouver, Wash. The cold and cloudy locale provides a sobering backdrop to the intense emotional drama of the film. Pictures have already begun to surface of filming, including several images of co-stars Dornan and Johnson in athletic clothing.
As filming for "Fifty Shades of Grey" progresses and more details surface, it becomes more and more clear that the film has a release date that deserves a place on any calendar. With a well-chosen cast, it is sure to be a gripping watch.
