The story of the Gulf oil spill is now unfolding something like the Iran hostage story of 1979. Media outlets are now running a day count on the disaster and giving new updates on the situation constantly. The oil companies, and increasingly the federal government, are being blamed for the spill while the Gulf Coast is held hostage. As more pictures come in showing the spill's dramatic impact on the coast, the public is growing more and more anxious for answers. Here is the latest updates on the Gulf oil spill. Pictures from the spill can be seen below.
- Increasingly the disaster is now becoming a political controversy. Yesterday, Sarah Palin accused the Obama administration of allegedly delaying their response to the tragedy because of contributions they received from British Petroleum. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs shot back at Palin saying she needs to become "better informed" on the oil industry. The Obama administration has defended their response by releasing a detailed time line of all the actions they have taken since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.
- BP has conceded that the siphon they inserted inside the leak is no longer drawing out as much oil as it once did.
- As the photos below illustrate the oil has now begun to make its way deep into the Louisiana marshlands. The heavy oil is now coating many birds and destroying their habitat. These may be the most dramatic pictures of the oil's effects on wildlife that have been released so far.
- The Obama administration has signaled that their patience is about to run out with the efforts of BP to stop the spill. Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar expressed frustration that BP has missed many deadlines in addressing the leak. Salazar said if the situation gets worse the federal government may take complete control over the operation.
- The most recent projections for the reach of the spill over the next few days can be seen here.

People can call names whoever they want, but they forget one thing: Our economy is oil based. Political and economical constraints prevent to flip to sustainable and safer sources of energy (we have for a while). Hence, no power on earth (probably not even God) can prevent oil companies to deplete all fossile fuel resources during the next decades. Accidents happen. In a neo-capitalistic system with maximized profits, we have to live with man-made disasters too. So simple is that. The good news are, when all oil deposits will be depleted, humanity will extinct itself in cruel nuclear wars for the last remaining resources. This way, earth will be geiven a second chance to regenerate its resources for the next millions of years. Maybe a future humanity V2.0 will do it better.
