The rumor was that Warner Bros. and DC Comics were preparing to release a movie with the Justice League in 2015, supposedly to capitalize on the success of "The Avengers" movie. Fans were understandably excited to see a line of DC heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and more share the screen. However, the project fell through after several months of speculation. Instead, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are preparing a completely different project, but it is one that still brings together two big heroes. That project is "Batman vs. Superman," and it is being billed as a sequel to "Man of Steel."
Originally, "Batman vs. Superman" was supposed to come out in 2015, but it is now scheduled for May of 2016. The director and screenwriter of the movie "Man of Steel" are set to work on the sequel, which should not be a surprise to anyone watching the box office returns of that movie. Zack Snyder is directing the movie and working closely with David Goyer to formulate the story. The original draft of the movie is said to have been written by Goyer, but the team also hired Chris Terrio, Oscar-winning screenwriter of the movie "Argo."
The details of the story are still under wraps, but one major plot point that is more or less confirmed is that Batman and Superman will be rivals, at least in the beginning. The movie is expected to star various other comic book heroes, but very little is known about their roles as of yet. On the other hand, a few details are known about the role of Superman in the movie. One detail is that he will be played once again by Henry Cavill. The Man of Steel's story of following his destiny and trying to find a place among humans will be continued in the new movie.
The search for an actor to play the role of Batman in the new movie took approximately one month as Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. tried to decide on an actor. Fans now know that the chosen actor is Ben Affleck. The character of Batman in the movie is expected to have the persona of a weary and seasoned hero. Less is known about Batman's look and costume in the movie, but according to Kevin Smith, it is expected to be unique and exciting. According to Smith, the costume will be something that has never been seen before with regards to Batman.
Another element of the movie is the popular character of Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is expected to appear in the movie, but so far not much is known about her role other than that she will be played by Gal Gadot. The rumor is that she has actually signed on to appear in three comic book movies for Warner Bros., including an actual Wonder Woman film. She is rumored to have won the part over Olga Kurylenko and Elodie Yung.
Another big confirmation is that the movie will be bringing back the character of Lois Lane. Amy Adams is expected to play Superman's love interest, the sharp reporter from the first movie. The new movie will work on further exploring the relationship between Lois and Clark Kent, but other than that, not much else is known about her role in the new story.
"Superman Vs. Batman" is further exciting fans with its epic villain match-up. Lex Luthor, the bald mastermind, is expected to be the big villain in the movie. Warner Bros. has also confirmed the announcement that Luthor will be played by Jesse Eisenberg, making Superman and Lex Luthor roughly the same age in the movie. Not much is known yet about the master criminal's dastardly plans for the match-up. Another big announcement is the news that Jeremy Irons would be coming along for the ride to play the famous comic book butler Alfred Pennyworth, hanging out with Ben Affleck's Batman in the Batcave.
There are plenty of other supporting characters in both the Batman and Superman worlds that are expected to meet up in "Batman vs. Superman," but so far, very few have been confirmed. Two major confirmed characters are Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Martha Kent and Perry White.
Without a doubt, this is a highly anticipated comic book showdown that is expected to feature several popular heroes aside from the two in the title. Fans are on the edge of their seats as they look forward to new announcements, new plot points and rumors from the expected 2016 blockbuster.
