Attention pet owners: another pet recall was announced today by the FDA. Nutri-Vet, LLC of Boise, ID is voluntarily recalling its Nutri-Vet and NutriPet Chicken Jerky Products due to contamination with Salmonella.
Salmonella can make pets ill that consume these products and their owners are also at risk from handling the contaminated pet products, Humans should wash their hands thoroughly if exposed to these jerky treats and any surface that has come into contact with them as well should be disinfected.
Symptoms for healthy humans infected with Salmonella include nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramping, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. More serious ailments may result including muscle pain, eye irritation, urinary tract symptoms, arthritis. If any of the above symptoms result, please contact your healthcare provider.
Pets may appear lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain may be symptoms of some pets. If your pet is infected, they may be carriers and can infect other animals and humans. Contact your veterinarian if your pet has either consumed this product or is displaying signs of illness.
The recalled treats were distributed throughout the US both online and in stores. They were sold between April, 2012 and February, 2013 with best by dates ranging from April 20, 2014 through October 3, 2014. The product is in a clear plastic bag.
