'The Last Stand' flops at the box office

Tragic news for Arnold Schwarzenegger fans comes from Box Office Mojo today.

His new film, “The Last Stand,” Opened well outside the top 5 at this weekend’s box office and fumbled into ninth place with $6.2 million. I have to recommend that action fans see it since it is a whole lot of fun, but unfortunately it didn’t find a market with its lackluster marketing campaign.

Mama,” however, did, and it took first place with $28.5 million. The B- Cinema Score should give it a little staying power considering that is above average for horror films (it really wasn’t that bad).

Second place went to the other Jessica Chastain starrer “Zero Dark Thirty,” which earned $15.8 million.

Silver Linings Playbook” expanded into drastically more theaters, and took third with $10.8 million.

In fourth was “Gangster Squad” which took in about $8.69 million, and has grossed a total of $33.4 million so far.

Broken City” crashed and burned out of the gate as well taking fifth place with $8.3 million. I am ashamed to say I thought it would take the top spot based on the star power, but I guess the Oscar buzz around the actors in the top three films was too much to compete with.
