According to an article posted today, February 18th, by Torrence Davis of STFUandPlay.com, a “very reliable source from Japan” claims that Team Ico’s latest project, The Last Guardian, is now set to release on Sony’s next generation console.
Team Ico, most known for titles such as The Shadow of the Colossus and Ico have been publicly working on The Last Guardian since 2007. Plagued by several delays and the departure of several key members of production, questions have been raised whether The Last Guardian will see the light of a retail release at all.
Taking into account how close Sony’s press conference is, this rumor—which is just a rumor, seems plausible given the amount of time left before Sony may start pushing for its next generation console, possibly named the PlayStation 4.
That would mean Team Ico will have gone a full generation of game systems without releasing a single sellable product. While The Last Guardian has been in production gamers have enjoyed the birth and release of five different Uncharted games, the Infamous series, the birth of the blockbuster modern shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare along with its many subsequent releases, what will soon be three Gears of War titles, five Halo games, and much more.
Given the many recent studio closures due to underperforming products, or failure to make product deadlines; Team Ico’s survival into the next generation without releasing a single product is not only a testament to the quality of its previous titles, but of how lucky the studio is to be alive.
If this rumor proves true, The Last Guardian will hopefully prove to be one hell of a next generation title.
I have a feeling Team Ico’s livelihood depends on it.
