Opening this Friday, July 11th and running until July 27, 2014 is the show “The Last Five Years,” a musical by Jason Robert Brown. The show has been called an emotionally powerful and intimate musical which tells the story of two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years.

The show has an unconventional structure in that one of the characters, the girl named Cathy, tells her story backwards while the man, Jamie, tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once during the show which is at their wedding.

Written and composed by Jason Robert Brown, this show won Drama Desk Awards for the music and the lyrics after the Off-Broadway premiere in 2002 starring Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott. It has since been produced throughout the US and in countries around the world.

This production in Asbury Park is directed by Corey Rubel with musical direction by Andrew Hertz. Ephie Aardema plays the part of Cathy and Spiro Galiatsatos plays Jamie.
