Who would make a sequel to a movie called The Last Exorcism? People hoping for money, of course. Articles by Deadline and Bloody Disgusting earlier today revealed that production on The Last Exorcism 2 will begin in New Orleans next month.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter also filmed in New Orleans
The Last Exorcism, which was shot in Baton Rouge and released in 2010, followed Reverend Cotton Marcus in his quest to prove that demons and exorcisms were all just a bunch of hokum. But the joke was on him when Louisiana teen Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) turned out to actually be possessed. It was announced awhile back that Bell would be reprising her role as Nell who, at the end of the last movie (spoiler alert, duh), gave birth to a demon baby. The documentary crew stumbled into the woods and, in true found footage movie fashion, dropped the camera as the movie faded to black, implying their demise at the hands of Nell’s crazy brother.
The Devil Inside bears strong resemblance to The Last Exorcism
According to Deadline, producer Eli Roth (who also worked on popular horror films like Hostel and Cabin Fever) already expects an R rating from the film. This is pretty interesting; not only are ratings generally not decided upon until after a movie is complete (though the guidelines are clear cut enough that most filmmakers probably know what to expect), but The Last Exorcism was a PG-13 film. Says Roth:
The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers.
Excited? Skeptical? Apathetic? The Last Exorcism is not a film most people expected a sequel to, if only because of the final sounding title. And you certainly don’t need an R rating or lots of blood and gore to tell a good horror story...then again, they don’t always hurt. Hattiesburg residents: Will you go to New Orleans next month and stalk...er, follow the cast and crew? Even if you don’t, you should still see the film when it comes to The Grand 18 in late 2012 or early 2013.
