Clevelanders looking for a family fun event that gives you the chance to spend a day along the Lake Erie shore and even tour a lighthouse for free should head to the annual lakeside Marblehead Lighthouse Festival being held on Saturday, October 12 on the Marblehead Peninsula. It is a one hour, 25 minute drive from Cleveland to Marblehead.
Lakeside Marblehead Lighthouse Festival A peninsula-wide event, the Lakeside Marblehead Lighthouse Festival offers a wide variety of family-oriented activities for all ages to enjoy including arts & crafts (more than 80 vendors displaying their wares), live musical entertainment, children's activities, hayrides, free miniature golf and shuffleboard, cornhole and a pumpkin decorating contest.
There will also be a feature movie ("Planes") presented at Orchestra Hall at Lakeside at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Visitors will have the opportunity to take a 40 minute sailboat ride to the Marblehead Lighthouse and back provided by B-About Sail Ministry, Each ride accommodates 15 passengers and you must be at least 10 years of age to participate. Life jackets are provided. Cost of the sailboat ride is by donation.
Children's crafts will give kids the chance to create Fall-related items.
Visitors will also be able to take a 90 minute walking tour of the historic Lakeside community and past its many cottages and Victorian homes. Lakeside is a Chautauqua community founded in 1873 by the Methodist church and is a center for cultural arts, education, religion and recreation.
One of the big attractions of the Festival is the opportunity to take a free tour of the Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continually operating lighthouse (built in 1821) on the Great Lakes before it closes for the season. Visitors will also be able to tour the Wolcott House, home to the first three Marblehead Lighthouse keepers. A free shuttle will be available all day to transport visitors from Lakeside to the lighthouse.
The Festival will also feature a Farmer's Market from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Walnut Avenue where local farmers will be selling fruits, vegetables, herbs. flowers, pumpkins, teas, jams and baked goods.
Food will be plentiful at the Festival. The Lakeside Methodist Men will be selling brats, pulled pork, chips, soft drinks and cookies. The Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will have hot dogs, chili dogs, sloppy joes, lobster bisque, soft drinks and desserts.
Hours for the Lakeside Marblehead Lighthouse Festival are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. Normally, Lakeside is a gated community and there is a gate fee but admission to the Festival is free. However, there is a small fee for some activities. Hayrides (offered 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Hotel Lakeside) are $1 per person. Children's crafts are $4 per child. Cost of the movie at Orchestra Hall is $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Parking is free.
