Samuel M. Powell writes in his book “Discovering Our Christian Faith, An Introduction to Theology” that;
“In Jesus Christ, God came into the world to create fellowship in a new act of creation and redemption. The Kingdom of God is the new creation.” (Powell, S. Page 175)
Jesus Christ is the Kingdom of God. When we repent and come to Christ – we are new creations within Christ. Mark 2:22 (NET) states;
“And no one pours new wine into old wineskins, otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be destroyed. Instead new wine is poured into new wine skins.”
Connect Mark 2:22 with 2nd Corinthians 5:17 (NET) which states;
“So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away – look, what is new has come!”
Once you repent and become a new creation in Christ – you are a part of the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is the new wineskin, and we are the new wine (shown by our fruits), and that we have our place with Jesus Christ. The church is the body with Jesus Christ as the head. This is demonstrated by the new covenant with Christ that took the place of the Mosaic Law. We no longer need to follow Jewish tradition. We are now a part of the Kingdom of God through Christ. John 14:6 (NET) states;
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
This is why a call to response is implicit in the teaching of the Kingdom. We need to repent of our sins and come to Christ – as He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life, and the only way to the Father and the Kingdom of Heaven. God the Father gave us freewill. Jesus wants us to come to Him freely. Thus – we need to respond and accept Jesus to be a part of the new Kingdom of God.
This shows the role of the Holy Trinity in the Kingdom of God. Joseph Oomen is a priest of the Mar Thoma Church and a published author with the United Theological College in Bangalore, India. He writes in the article “The Concept of Trinity and Its Implication for Christian Communication in Indian Context” that;
“The Christian doctrine of the Trinity affirms that while God is one, He exists as three persons: The unknown God, creator and source of all life; Jesus Christ who has revealed the Father, and the Holy Spirit, the bond of love between Father and Son, who is always at work in transforming the world according to God’s purpose.” (Oomen, J.)
Jesus Christ is the new Kingdom of God. He is the way to the Father and the Kingdom of Heaven. The Holy Spirit is constantly with us and is always working with us to live a Christ-like life. This is the bond that we have with the Holy Trinity. To get to the Father, we need the Son; and the Holy Spirit is what keeps us bonded to Him with love.
Jesus Christ is the Messiah that the prophets of old had spoken of. He gave us a new covenant. This took the place of the old covenant made under Mosaic Law. This is how the Kingdom of God is the new creation. Luke 22:20 (NET) states;
“And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying; “This cup that is poured out for you in the new covenant in my blood.”
Through the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ – the new Kingdom of God replaced the Kingdom of the old order.
We know what the Kingdom of God is, however, when is the Kingdom of God? The Kingdom of God is now. Romans 14:17-18 (NET) states;
“For the Kingdom of God does not consist of food and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. For the one who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by people.”
The Kingdom of God is now. Romans 14:17-18 also shows us again how the Trinity plays a role in the Kingdom of God. We serve Christ to please the Father, and we receive joy through the Holy Spirit.
In summary, by living for Christ, and repenting, you become a new creation in Him and become a part of the Kingdom of God. Through the blood of Christ Jesus – we have a new covenant that has taken the place of Mosaic Law. In Him – we live life anew.
