Throw on your best topper, sip mint juleps and bet on some ponies at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley this Saturday, May 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during their annual Kentucky Derby Party. General admission is only $6 for adults (kids 17 and under are free) and you will have the chance to win up to $300 if you enter the “Run for the Roses” Hat Contest.

You can enter the hat contest by signing up online or entering day of by 1:30 p.m. The three categories: Funniest and Most Outrageous, Best Racing Theme and Most Glamorous, will have three winners in each category who can take home $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third.

Although it is not enforced, Golden Gate Fields does encourage dressing for the event to get yourself in the mood. Some apparel suggestions: bowties, seersucker suits, fedoras and sundresses.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better (or cheaper) to spend a festive day out and about, Golden Gate Fields is offering free shuttle rides to and from the races from the North Berkeley BART station. What’s not to love? See you at the track.
