The Kentucky Derby and New York security

It's the first Saturday in May so it must be Kentucky Derby time! What horse ran the fastest time ever?

It is also time for beefed up security in and around the racetrack as thousands of people descend on Louisville, Kentucky for the fastest two minutes in sports.

In fact on average 150,000 people come to the city to enjoy the mint juleps and all of the parties and festivities.

In New York City, home of the Belmont States (the third leg of the Triple Crown), it is this type of security challenge that will be faced on the weekend of June 11th as close to 100,000 people pour into the racetrack and thousands more into New York City.

With both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes taking place so soon after the killing of Osama bin Laden, it creates new challenges as security has to be beefed up to the highest level in order to prevent any type of terrorist attack.

As the Belmont States gets closer, if there is a possibility of a Triple Crown being won it will create that much more of a frenzy leading up to race day requiring that even greater attention be paid to security issues.

So what horse did run the fastest Kentucky Derby time ever? Secretariat of course in a time of 1:59.40. The same horse that blew away a Belmont Stakes field in 2:24 back in 1973.
