The Kate Effect: Duchess of Cambridge can't bring Jesire back from the dead?

At the National Portrait Gallery earlier this month, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge wore a pleasing gray Jesire outfit inspired by 1950s retro. According to reports in the “Sun,” “Mail,” and others, the Jesire dress must have come from either a clearance rack or the back of Catherine's closet, since Jesire staged its United Kingdom clearance sale in August, 2011. The label continues—just not in the United Kingdom.

At first fashion reporters and the company itself hoped that, because of the Kate Effect, the defunct label may be coming back. Once available at upscale department stores John Lewis and House of Frasier, Jesire clothing was based out of Hong Kong and run by Martyn Vines, who told the papers that he'd been “inundated” with calls to make the clothing again.  (Story continues below.)

However, it does not currently appear that this fairytale had a happy ending. If the answer had turned out to be a “yes,” it would have been the first time the Duchess of Cambridge's fashion choice has been responsible for bringing a company back from the dead. “The Sun” claims that Catherine has boosted the economy by £1 bn. through women wanting to look just like her; until then, anyone looking for Jesire has a choice of Ebay or thrift stores.

Unfortunately, there's been no news on Jesire for two weeks so, if the label is coming back, it's not doing so any time soon. At least the Duchess of Cambridge has been successful in “promoting” Hobbs Union and Madame Tussauds.
