The Village Voice has announced The Julie Ruin will headline the third annual 4Knots Music Festival later this summer. Six more acts including Speedy Ortiz were announced. Several more bands and artists will be named before the July 12 event.
The 4Knots Music Festival is a new, young endeavor in The Village Voice’s fourteen year history of presenting summer music events, and its artist lineups have become more notable with each year. In 2013, Kurt Vile & The Projectors headlined 4Knots in front of smaller rock, alternative and electronic acts.
The Julie Ruin is a new project led by riot grrl icon and former lead singer of the punk group Bikini Kill, Kathleen Hanna. In the 1990s, Hanna became an leading voice among feminists involved in changing the D.I.Y punk scene in America. The Julie Ruin maintains Hanna’s spirit with a more playful new wave, electronic pop rock sound.
Speedy Ortiz has a more down tempo indie sound, also with female fronted vocals. Five more acts —Those Darlins, Radkey, Viet Cong, Nude Beach and Juan Wauters — were announced to play the 2014 4Knots Music Festival. At least four more acts will play on July 12 at South Street Seaport.
4Knots will take place near Pier 17 in downtown Manhattan. Concertgoers of any age will be able to attend the rain or shine event.
After the 4Knots Music Festival sounds off outdoors, The Village Voice will host a ticketed after party with live acts that evening at Webster Hall in the East Village. Details on how to attend the after party have not been announced.
