The joy of giving and a dog named Webster

Kern County, CA - "Things" are of little value to a homeless person. But a companion, especially a canine companion - can be invaluable.

The Basic Needs Foundation, a non-profit organization, is currently working to help one man and his constant companion...a dog named Webster.

Volunteers with the Basic Needs Foundation met this homeless pair a few weeks ago at a free mobile spay/neuter clinic.

At that time they learned that this man and his dog had absolutely no shelter from the weather.

When temperatures drop and storms roll in, the pair retreats to a campground bathroom to escape the rain and wind.

Sadly, in the winter months, most campground bathrooms are closed - which leaves Webster and his guardian completely vulnerable to the elements.

The initial request from the foundation to help this pair read as follows:

We need your help to locate a WATERPROOF, no more than 5 lbs, one-person tent that can be tied to a backpack when it's folded. We need this tent prior to 10/20/11. Our hired Mobile SpayDay Lake Isabella is coming back to the region on 10/22/11 to fix 50 pets.

A subsequent email was sent out this morning - a high quality tent, capable of withstanding the elements, has been chosen.

Now, an effort is underway to raise the funds necessary for its purchase.

Anyone interested in helping Webster and his person can do so by donating online at the Basic Needs Foundation website.

Or checks can be mailed to:
