'Tis the season for Clevelanders to enjoy the Northeast Ohio annual apple harvest season and there is no better place to celebrate the mighty fruit than at the 40th annual Johnny Appleseed Festival being held at Mapleside Farms in Brunswick, Ohio on Friday, September 13, Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15. It is approximately a 30 minute drive from Cleveland to Brunswick.
Johnny Appleseed Festival Taking place at the top of the hill of Mapleside Farms overlooking 4000 apple trees in the valley, the Festival provides visitors the opportunity to purchase apples from the orchards of Mapleside Farms and even have the choice of bagging their own apples.
The Festival features a wide variety of arts & crafts and live entertainment in addition to Pumpkin Village now open for the season. At Pumpkin Village kids can enjoy a 70 foot Giant Jumping Pillow (the largest in Ohio), ride on the new cow and pig trains, play interactive games, make their way through a 7 acre corn maze, slide down American's largest slide (311 feet) and take a hayride through the valley (wagons pulled by John Deere tractors). There is even a pumpkin patch.
The Festival will also be the site of the World Apple Pie Eating Championship (Who can eat the most pie in 8 minutes?) on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage at Mapleside Farms. Contestants will be vying for cash prizes ranging from $150 for 6th place up to $2500 for the winner. Competing in the contest will be champion eater Joey Chestnut, famous for winning several Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contests including the one in 2013. Chestnut will be joined by 14 other of the world's top eaters and a select group of locals.
Food will be aplenty at the Johnny Appleseed Festival with an outdoor barbecue featuring ribs smothered in Mapleside Farms' apple butter barbecue sauce, pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and corn-on-the-cob. Also available will be giant apple fritters, homemade apple pie, apple dumplings, caramel apples and apple cider.
Also on the property is the Orchard House restaurant, the Farm Market & Bakery, a gift shop and an ice cream shop.
Check for hours on Friday. Saturday hours for the Johnny Apple seed Festival are 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. and the hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors (60+) and $1 for children (6-12). Children 5 and under are free. Some activities may require an additional charge. Parking is free.
