From a compelling performance to an opportunity of aspiring ballet dancers and prodigies to take class from the world’s best, we have an event unlike many others coming to San Antonio. Audiences of San Antonio have not been so fortunate as to have witnessed the majesty of the renowned Joffrey Ballet since 1979. This re-visit comes with a series of not only the performance of Robert Joffrey’s re-creation of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) but add a champagne and cinema documentary viewing, a fashion event, a Gala, cast party with the local patrons and a Master class for the aspiring students of San Antonio and the surrounding area. All these wonderful events brought to our community by Arts San Antonio.

The events take place through a three month period with the Champagne and Cinema taking place January 31 offering patrons a chance to view The Joffrey Ballet: Mavericks of American Dance, a documentary showing the beginnings, hardships, triumphs and current glory the Joffrey has enjoyed over the years. The evening consisted of not only free popcorn for the evening, but included champagne, free valet sponsored by Mercedes Benz of Boerne and a viewing of the highlight of the evening, the documentary viewing sponsored by the Santikos Palladium IMAX Theater.

February 6 brings a new look at the ballet. It is a mere look into the fashion trends of today of what to wear to the ballet. How trendy! In association with Neiman Marcus located in La Cantera, Arts San Antonio and the Joffrey Ballet, patrons had an afternoon of the fashion show and a reception.

March truly brings the Rite of Spring as a reception held at the McNay Museum with Ballet San Antonio and the Joffrey Workshop Texas welcome the principal dancers, artistic leadership and senior leadership of the Joffrey Ballet this Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 pm. This elegant gala takes place at the McNay Museum with reservations available for a purchase price of $200 a ticket by contacting Arts San Antonio.

The much awaited performance of the Rite of Spring comes to the Lila Cockrell Theater in San Antonio Convention Center on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 pm made possible by the generous grant of the Russell Hill Rodgers Fund for the Art. The ballet is a story from 1913 written and performed amidst the Russian Revolution and World War I. It is Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and was considered virtually impossible to perform, a major challenge even to virtuoso orchestras. The audacious ballet depicts the ceremonies of a prehistoric Slavic tribe where a sacrificial ritual takes place during which a maiden dances herself to death to appease the gods. The ballet was so radical for its time that its opening was laden with scandal. In this debut in Paris, a riot broke out in the auditorium and spilled out into the streets. This performance marks the Centennial celebration of this historic event.

The world-renowned The Joffrey Ballet has revived this memorable ballet with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky. Tickets are still available with prices ranges from $29 balcony seating to $110.00 for premium seating. The premium price not only allows you to impeccable seating within the theater but entrance to the cast party event to follow immediately after the ballet. Following the Ballet, is the fifth event of the Joffrey Experience Dance For Your Life Cast Party to take place at The Grotto at the Convention Center. Reservations can be made for an additional $50 through ArtsSA.

The final event for this wonderful experience is the Master Class conducted by Ballet Masters of the Joffrey Ballet. These workshops are presented in association with San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet and the Joffrey Workshop Texas. They take place on Saturday, March 9, 2013 Lila Cockrell Theatre with opportunities for two levels of workshops. Intermediate level takes place from 10:00 -11:30 a.m. taught by Ballet Master Gerart Charles with an Advanced level workshop at 12:00 – 1:30 pm taught by Ballet Master and Principal Coach Graca Sales. Observers may view from the audience seating for $10. Price of the workshops is $35.00 a participant. The process for becoming part of this opportunity begins with a submittal of your resume describing your dance experience and a letter of recommendation from your dance instructor indicating which class the student should attend to joffreymasterclasses@artssa.org. Applications are considered on a first- come, first-served basis. There is a limit of 50 participants per workshop. Payment required in advance. Times are subject to change.

The Experience can begin this Thursday and last through the weekend. Information can be found at www.artssa.org or by calling 210-226-2891.
