'The Jay Leno Show' now resorting to baiting 'Twilight' fans for ratings (with video)

Robert Pattinson, seen here being adorable with Jay Leno, won't be on Monday's show.

"The Jay Leno Show" has a whole box full of ratings troubles: the show's been dipping further and further down every week in terms of viewers, and the outcry against NBC's decision to air the show 5 nights per week has grown to a national level.  But the flailing comedy series may have one, last trick up its sleeve: "Twilight: New Moon".  Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers...

When all else fails, bring in "Twilight". Bloggers use "New Moon" news (or, even more frequently, non-news and "New Moon" page tags) to pump up their page-views.  New movies fight to get the newest "Twilight" trailer attached to prints of their opening-weekend films.  And now, Jay Leno's joined the rest of the crowd.

According to Hit Fix, this is happening right now:

Desperate to snag some young viewers (any young viewers), NBC is proudly announcing that Taylor Lautner is dropping by "The Jay Leno Show" next week and that he's bringing a movie clip with him.

The network promises that Lautner will be accompanied by an exclusive clip from "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," a clip featuring the jailbait heartthrob and co-star Kristen Stewart.

Lautner's appearance is set for Monday (November 16) night, the one-week anniversary of one of the lowest-rated episodes of "The Jay Leno Show" to date.

"The Jay Leno Show" has tried several different tactics to lure in viewers, generally in the form of super-celebrity guests.  Michelle Obama's appearance, for example, was heavily promoted (only to see the night's ratings barely tick upward from the week before) by NBC.  But, like failed bloggers and movie executives hoping to bump up their opening weekend tallies by attaching "New Moon" footage to their works, "The Jay Leno Show" is hoping that Lautner's appearance will bring all those "Twilight" fans who don't give a damn about Leno's series in front of their sets.

We'll have to wait until Monday to see if this experiment actually works, but based on the few interactions that the Comedy Examiner's Office has had with "Twilight" fans over the past few months (and the spike in page-views that occur whenever we even vaguely mention the word "Twilight" in our articles), we're thinking that this might actually bring Leno some much-needed viewers.

Now, we promised you video, and video's what you'll get.  Here's the last time that Jay Leno collided with "Twilight": his interview with the pale-faced heartthrob of the "Twilight" series, Robert Pattinson.  Enjoy, folks:

What do you think, folks?  Cheap ploy on the part of NBC, or just the promotional machine that is Hollywood making the rounds?  Sound off in the comments section below, folks: we wanna know what you think about all this nonsense.  And, while you're here, check out these other recent articles from the Comedy Examiner's Office:
