What kinds have training have you done?
Making movies is a very special handicraft. It is a profession that can only be successfully pursued with a great deal of pure ability and even more passion. What would it be like if there were to be an actor who brought exactly these characteristics to the table? What would it be like if there were an absolutely convincing and highly creative actor? What would it be like if there were an experienced pro that had learned his trade at both the NYFA in Los Angeles and the Munich Film Academy (München Film Akademie) as well as the renowned Stage School Hamburg, and can speak both German and English? This actor exists! My name ist Daniel "Dean" Martin. I am a Sandy Meisner trained actor. Besides my great smile, I am quirky, unique and talented. I am a versatile and intensely committed actor and would love the opportunity to take on your challenging roles. I believe I can bring a unique and dynamic quality of my portrayal as an actor for your client productions.
About me: I am 198 cm tall (6’5”) and have blonde hair and blue eyes. I live in both California and Munich. I’ve already conducted a number of modeling jobs for Sports Illustrated and Faceland.com. My film career began in Germany with the thrillers ‘Stoopid’, ‘Death Walk’, and ‘Mimikry’. The filming of my novel ’THE SEVEN SEALS – The Book of Revelation’ is planned for 2016.
With the workshops "Acting for Film Master Program" and "Film & Digital" at the NYFA as well as "Camera Acting Master Class" at the Munich Film Academy, I’ve continually expanded my background knowledge in the field of cinema.
Above and beyond that, I completed the workshops "Acting for Film" and "Musical & Performance Arts" under the direction of Wolfgang Brehm at the Stage School Hamburg. I currently plan to attend the One Year Conservatory Acting Program held by Mark W. Travis in 2014.
Making movies is my passion!
MIRACLES ARE DREAMS, which have become the truth. My greatest wish is to show my new agent/representatives or casting directors that I have the emotional depth and the talent for real acting, which is "to live truthfully under the imaginary circumstances“ through improvisation, emotional truth and personal response.
How and when did you first get into performing?
I think it was at academic high school when I got my first part at the Theater Group. The teacher said one rememberable sentence: "Act as if what you do makes a difference - it does".
I gave these words a LOT of thought. My immediate reaction was “Duh – of course what you do makes a difference. Every single solitary thing you do impacts somebody in some way.” Then I started looking deeper at the meaning of these words. On ripples, the surface, yes, it is a state the obvious moment, but look below the surface and thinks about it for a moment. Something as insignificant as a smile, or a cheerful greeting can change the mood of somebody else. More importantly, a smile and a cheerful word can make a difference in the most important person in your world – yourself!
When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. You are responsible for you. What you say, think and do impacts a lot of people, but first and foremost, it impacts yourself. Why not do things that are going to make you feel good and be happy? It’s a ripple effect. If you are happy, that happiness radiates off you and encompasses those around you, spreading ever outward. It’s pretty cool when you think about it. Everything you do DOES make a difference!!
ACTING means RE-ACTING.
That was the beginning of my way/career as an actor.
Who were some of your biggest inspirations?
Life! I've heard a lot of comments to the effect of "one day when I have X, then I will be able to live an ... life." You can fill in the blank with your own perceived limitations: money, a better job, more space to create in, a more supportive relationship, more time (!!!!), etc. Don't wait for life to be perfect. It never will be. Start living your inspired life now. That’s what I do!
But in person, my biggest inspiration was/ is Mr. Al Pacino. I like the way he does his job as an actor. And I love the attitude behind it: “There is only one way of surviving all the early heartbreaks in this business. You must have a sense of humor. And I think it also helps if you are a dreamer. I had my dreams all right. And that is something no one can ever take away. They cost nothing, and they can be as real as you like to make them. You own your dreams and they are priceless. I’ve been a lavatory attendant, a theatre usher, a panhandler, all for real. Now, as an actor, I can be a journalist today and a brain surgeon tomorrow. That’s the stuff my dreams are made of.” -Al Pacino
What has been your favorite production to be part of so far and why?
MIMIKRY/UPSIDE DOWN - predicate valuable
The dreamer who can not distinguish whether he is real or dreamed by another one, in literature and film remains a popular motive. The scope ranges from the stories of Jorge Luis Borges to the Matrix films.
In Mimikry it's never clear whether even a single image shown is real or not or if all shown is only in the imagination of the protagonist. The therapeutic dream experiment comes the fears of the subjects so close that Vic loses hopelessly in it. Or he was from the beginning that person to which the experiment is performed. And the one who floats asleep in a liquid in that scene (perhaps the only "real") – connected to hoses? This irritating ambivalence of what the audience sees is one of the most compelling qualities of the film.? This irritating ambivalence of what the audience sees is one of the most compelling qualities of the film.
The filmmakers manage to create a virtual completely self-contained world on screen, whose cold, repellent atmosphere seems to correspond more to a state of mind. In this constantly changing perspective, narrative levels and possibilities of interpretation, the viewer is drawn to one side into this intense and consistent created world, but can do on the other hand, no rhyme to it.
This is an experimental film that impresses with its consequence in the mystification and in which the only thing to take for granted that are human emotions and fears.
Who would be your ideal project and why?
The Expendables stories are too well positioned as it can only be a Trilogy … there are so much more stories to be told and other people’s lives, which MUST be brought into theaters. With "Expendables 4" a dream would come true for me. My future colleagues were the heroes of my childhood. I am a big fan of the Expendables stories and the characters introduced in them. I am an INDUSTRY HOLLYWOOD youngster and I also have no big action name, BUT I am sure that I have the interest, imagination, and unorthodoxy to be an powerful BIG-BANG-action-performer - like the other Expendables guys. I don’t believe there are any unsolvable tasks. There are only challenges that need to be faced. With inexhaustible energy and a positive attitude, I invest my everything into every project and commit my entire ability to it. What is so special about the story & characters? I want to answer this question using Sly's words. He said: For me it's primarily about my favorite topic: restitution. Each of us regrets something in his life and wishes he could go back in time to change it. Thus, the action also works for the audience; the story needs a contact point, a tangible conflict. And that starts almost always where you can see the people and their problems behind the warrior. This everlasting legend: the strong help the weak in hopeless situations.
What projects do you have coming up?
At present time I’m writing a novel titled "THE SEVEN SEALS – The Book of Revelation". The book of Revelation is like the script of a future film. It allows the Readers to put themselves in the last years of human age. This refers to the time just before the birth of a new era, when the Anti Christ will come back to earth bringing our crisis-ridden world finally lasting peace - by destroying 4/5 of humanity. It starts an adventurous journey to the seven hidden places of the magic seals - the monumental buildings of antiquity - the Seven Wonders of the World! For the totally desperate mother a race against time, a chase through the past of our history with an uncertain end! She has to decipher the mystery of the revelation to trace her husband's route. Best case to be one step ahead of him! She is faced with the distrust of the people, with lies, betrayal and resentment of the Church ... and the pragmatic bureaucracy of the authorities. The novel appears in bookstores at the end of 2015. The filming of my novel ’THE SEVEN SEALS – The Book of Revelation’ is planned for 2016.
I work hard on my own career as actor and writer in the US. I want to realize my dream of relocating to Los Angeles and to work there. Founding my own film production firm and being inspiration and protagonist for new faces.
With great power comes great responsibility. As the shy student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) discovers his Spiderman forces in the eponymous film, his uncle and foster father Ben Parker admonished him to use his powers responsibly. Responsibility is the magic word! Every successful person has a responsibility towards his fellow men. Bill Gates has made it his mission to support people in need. The guys from “Expendables” set an example to us. They bring this responsibility home to us. They call it to our minds. Sly knows about this responsibility. Like his fellow actors (Clint Eastwood or Woody Allen). They have to act on the responsibility as protagonists for new faces. Only in that way, newcomers will get this unique opportunity to show that they have the emotional depth and the talent for real acting, which is “to live truthfully under the imaginary circumstances” through improvisation, emotional truth and personal response (Sandy Meisner).
What are your plans for the future?
Future is just being now! Maybe you can plan a career...but that's all. The rest are all dreams, and it's good to have dreams, they make us move fast trying to get them.
What is your advice to aspiring performers?
I want to quote the greatest ever. “Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious...and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney. He taught us to dream big. He resented the limitation of his own imagination. His life’s work was a labor of love and his simple formula was this: dream, diversify, and never miss an angle. He was the late, great Walt Disney. His business was happiness. He brought tears and smiles to kids, young and old, around the world. He was a dreamer and a doer. If you’ve ever wished upon a star, and hoped your dreams would come true, then you missed Walt’s message. You have to make your dreams happen. You bring your dreams to life through imagination and work … no matter how impossible they might seem. Actually, Walt had a very specific recipe for making dreams come true. His recipe was the four C’s: Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy. He said that the greatest of these is Confidence. Without confidence, you won’t get past the challenges and critics that stand before you.
We can learn a lot from Walt Disney’s timeless words of wisdom.
Many, many people dream of making a living from the craft of acting. Some of them just leave it right there, as a dream, others quit their day job and choose the life of poverty and constant stress for exchange in the hopes to someday make enough money as a working actor that’s able to pay his/her rent. I hope you make the right decision.
I did it!
