Like anything these days, the costs are constantly going up and in the acting world it's making things tough. One of those situations is being able to keep plays alive. The Actors Project NYC is a strong supporter of this and is working hard to continue to produce their annual plays.
TAPNYC is a theatre company whose mission is to assist actors land representation and work through quality industry showcases and quality original plays.
"Our Off Broadway Industry showcases have over a 75% success rate and we feature over 300 actors each year," commented TAPNYC owner and founder Bobby Holder. "We produce over 10 Off Broadway Industry showcases a year with huge success. Those shows are produced through membership dues and sponsorship programs. Our members and alumni can be seen on stage (Broadway/Off Broadway), film, television, commercials, print, voiceovers, etc. Our ensemble program is perhaps the most successful in the city."
As successful as they've been, TAPNYC is finding it difficult to continue to produce their annual plays.
"Though our plays receive huge audience support (we sold out every night of our last play), our play division of TAPNYC is struggling," Bobby explained. "Our venue is intimate and our ticket prices are affordable. Because of increasing costs we have went from producing three plays a year, to producing one play every two years. I believe that having a play division is fundamental to the growth of our actors and of TAPNYC Theatre Company. So, we're not giving up!"
Bobby already has his next play in the works called “Manhattan Fable-The Actress Who Cried Wolf!” and a plan in place to ensure this play happens.
If you are wondering what they are doing to achieve this goal it's by organizing a fundraising campaign through indiegogo.com, an international crowdfunding site where anyone can create a campaign to raise money for film, music, art, charity, small businesses, gaming, theater, and more.
The campaign is just started and their goal is to raise $15,000. They already have secured over $1000.
"Manhattan Fable is one of our most well-reviewed plays by audiences and industry and I think it's the perfect play to draw attention to us and help us keep original plays alive at TAPNYC," continued Bobby. "Since I wrote the play and will be directing it, we will be able to avoid royalty fees and director fees. We mostly need funds to pay for publicity, casting, theatre rental, rehearsal space, stipends, insurance, and other expenses."
