This week, the Academy Awards banned The Hurt Locker producer, Nicolas Chartier from the 2010 Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week that the producer of the Hurt Locker, Nicolas Chartier’s invitation to the Oscars has been rescinded. The Hurt Locker has been nominated for Best Picture for the Oscars that will take place this weekend.
The Academy stated that Nicolas Chartier violated campaigning standards by sending out an email to Academy voters.
"Chartier had recently disseminated an e-mail to certain Academy voters and other film industry figures in which he solicited votes for his own picture and disparaged one of the other contending films," the Academy statement read.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Chartier's email asked people to spread the word about The Hurt Locker, a movie about the Iraq war so that his movie would win, "and not a $500M film." Many of the recipients of the email took this statement to be a snub against James Cameron’s mega-hit Avatar.
The Academy said that by "casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film" broke campaigning standards rules of the Academy.
The Academy had the option to remove the Hurt Locker from the Best Picture category, but chose only to ban Chartier instead. If the film wins best picture, then the other three producers will accept the award. The other three producers include: Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal and Greg Shapiro.
