Ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow pushes James Cameron off the stage at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards winning Best Director for The Hurt Locker (2009). She makes filmmaking history by being the first female ever to win this Oscar. In the war of Kathryn Bigelow vs. James Cameron and The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar, clearly the winner of this boxing match is The Hurt Locker! It won Best Picture, an Oscar that James Cameron had his eyes set on for Avatar (2009). It also won 4 other Oscars for Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. Although a disappointing night for James Cameron, as expected Avatar did win 3 Oscars notably in Cinematography, Art Direction and Visual Effects.
This will give Hollywood something to talk about for a long time as the production budget for The Hurt Locker was only $15 million compared to Avatar's $500 million. The Hurt Locker and Summit Entertainment made only a little over its production budget by making $14,700,000 domestically and $6,656,139 in foreign markets. Avatar made $720,189,000 (the highest of all nominations) domestically and $1,839,000,000 in foreign markets. For once the well deserved underdog wins showing a masterpiece does not need a huge budget or has to make a lot of money. With the huge win today, this should bring up DVD sales for The Hurt Locker in weeks to come and bring up earnings. Already the Best Buy exclusive collectible The Hurt Locker Blu-ray SteelBook that has been long out of stock and out of print has been commanding for high prices well over $80 each on eBay.com.

In a stunning win another female, Sandra Bullock, won her first Oscar ever as Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side (2009). She had just received her first 2 Razzies the evening before the Oscars. She won Worst Actress for her role in All About Steve (2009) and Worst Screen Couple for her and Bradley Cooper for their roles in All About Steve.
Sandra Bullock even attended the Razzies, pulling onstage a wagon full of All About Steve to distribute to the Razzies attendees. She was very good-natured about winning the Razzies and promised to return again next year to The Gala 31th Annual RAZZIE Awards if everyone changed their mind after taking the All About Steve DVD home, really watching it and having a better understanding of the film. She also joked that since All About Steve is a film about a woman stalking a man, indeed that would make it seriously the Worst Screen Couple! Sandra Bullock definitely deserves this Oscar, if nothing else to show good sportsmanship and her openness to criticism, positive or negative. These are essential qualities for any actor or actress who wishes to succeed in show business.

Definitely a record breaking night for females, Mo'Nique won her first Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire (2009). She is the fifth black female to win an acting Oscar. In her acceptance speech Mo'Nique thanked Hattie McDaniel for her inspiration, who was the first black female to win an Oscar for her supporting role 70 years ago in Gone With the Wind (1939). Whoopie Goldberg was the second black female who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost (1990). Halle Berry was the only black female ever to win Best Actress for her role in Monster's Ball (2001). Jennifer Hudson was the fourth black female to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dreamgirls (2006).
In a year of firsts, it was a first Oscar for both winners of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for his role in Crazy Heart (2009). Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Inglourious Basterds (2009).
