The hunt for happiness

The week of January 17 - 23, 2010 is the Hunt for Happiness Week; which is sponsored by the Secret Society of Happy People. Pamela Gail founded the Secret Society of Happy People in 1998 to provide a missing voice for those who experience happiness and want to express it without other people raining on their parade. Their Motto is, “If you're happy and you know it ... tell somebody!” The SOHP has more than 7,000 members in 34 countries.

Happiness. What is it? Happiness is defined as a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy.There are many things that can affect our state of mind and our feelings at any given time, however, we control what those things are and how long we allow them to affects us. Something may happen that causes you to feel sad or depressed. Whether you stay sad or depressed for any length of time is up to you. People sometimes make you angry. How long you stay angry is up to you…and so on with every other emotion that you can feel. I’m sure we all want to be happy.

You often hear people say, “I’m not happy anymore” or “I just want to be happy”. People divorce because they are no longer happy. People commit suicide because they are not happy. Happiness, or the lack thereof, has influenced many major decisions in people’s lives. Many people when asked what would make them happy do not have a definitive answer. Why? Because different things will make you happy at different times. If you are alone you might say finding a mate will make you happy. If you are having financial difficulties you might say more money will make you happy. When you allow an external source to meet an internal need or desire, you have given up the power to control your own life and emotional health to someone or something else. You have become a “puppet” to be controlled by your circumstances and the people around you.

The question I would like to pose to you is this… Is happiness something we can find or is it something we create or choose for ourselves? If you have not felt that you were a happy person, what can you do to regain control of your life and experience happiness this week and every week to come? Simply make a choice. You can CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY! Choose not to let negative emotions stay and fester like a disease. Here are some daily declarations that will begin to change your state of mind, which will in turn, change your actions and reactions to what you face in your day-to-day. 

1.    Today, I choose not to be offended.
2.    Today, I choose not to be sad.
3.    Today, I choose not to be angry.
4.    Today, I choose not to be depressed.
5.    Today, I choose to have peace.
6.    Today, I choose to have joy.
7.    Today, I choose to be HAPPY!
This week as the nation “Hunts for Happiness”, take a moment to spread the word, “Happiness is a choice and you can CHOOSE to be happy, TODAY!”

    Today a choice is set before you, which one will you choose. Life or death, love or hate, anger or joy. I recommend choosing life!
