The Howard Stern Show has joined the social messaging website Twitter. The Howard Stern Show officially joined Twitter on April 9th after several weeks of on-air debate about the potential enhancement that Twitter could add to the show. Howard Stern has repeatedly stated that his disinterest in and disdain for social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. Stern and co-host comedian Artie Lange have made a

The responsibility of updating the Howard Stern Show tweets was initially delegated to show producer Gary "Baba Booey" Dell'Abate. Dell'Abate, who is roasted by the show's patriach Howard Stern on a daily basis, came under fire almost immediately for tweets that were "so incredibly lame." Howard Stern took control of the Twitter page himself after the show, but tweeted that he was "pretty sure I'm almost done" with the novelty by 11:25 that morning. Those following The Howard Stern Show could practically hear Howard groaning through his tweet as he announced that it had taken nearly six hours for him to figure out how to use "Twitterberry," the Twitter Blackberry application.

The Howard Stern Show's first few days of updates consisted mostly of short summaries of the on-air goings-on. Since most of Howard Stern's Twitter followers were already listening to the show, the updates seemed particularly irrelevant. While Robin Quivers reported news stories about Ashton Kutcher and CNN's race towards a million Twitter followers, Howard Stern was lamenting his own show's complete inability to find its place in the Twitter landscape. As the self-proclaimed, "King of All Media," it didn't take long for Howard to realize that he was going to need to revolutionize yet another communication format.

One of the most compelling elements of The Howard Stern Show has always been the regular call-in guests. Howard has always relied on his callers (who range from beyond bizarre to utterly banal) to provide him with a context in which to make his social commentary. Howard Stern handed over the tweeting responsibilities over to longtime Wack-Pack member Wendy the Retard. Howard Stern's "guest tweeter" gamble paid off--BIG time. Wendy took the responsibility of guest tweeter for The Howard Stern Show to heart. She provided regular updates on her day-to-day activities including such tweets as: "Wendy is washing the dishes with a sponge and a dish soap. Of course, several of Wendy's tweets pertained to her personal financial struggles. Wendy regularly calls in to The Howard Stern Show asking for money.

The Howard Stern Show gained more than 4,000 followers during its first day on Twitter. There are now over 47,000 people following The Howard Stern Show on Twitter.
