The Hot at Nights at The Listening Room Cafe

A few months ago, I introduced you to a band called The Foreign Exchange.  This weekend, some different musical stylings – from the same minds – will be gracing the stage at The Listening Room Café.

Chris Boerner was born and raised in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.  His first musical endeavor was learning to play the saxophone at age 8.  Later, Boerner learned to play guitar, and his love of guitar led him to play in rock bands while in high school.  By the time he graduated from Duke University, however, he was more interested in jazz.

One of the many bands he played with was The Mighty Burners, a jazz/hip-hop combo.  After working on their debut album, Boerner developed a love of recording and producing.  He’s recorded and toured with various North Carolina-based bands since, including Who’s Bad and The Foreign Exchange.

Chris Boerner’s newest love is the 8-string guitar.  With his newest instrument came a new group: The Hot at Nights.  While Boerner acts as bandleader and guitarist, the trio also features Matt Douglas on sax and woodwinds, and Nick Baglio on drums.   While they draw from classic funk, pop, rock, and contemporary jazz, their live style is largely improvisational.

The group’s most recent project, released in November 2011, is called the Shibuya Session EP.  On this EP, The Hot at Nights worked with Nicolay – one half of The Foreign Exchange – to rearrange and record live versions of several of his previously-released solo works.

The Hot at Nights and Nicolay are now touring together to show off their latest collaboration.
