This is the second installment on the new compilation California Feeling. Today Stephen and The Honeys discuss the title track. It’s worth noting that this song was first recorded by American Spring (Marilyn and Diane) in the summer of 1977. It's also worth noting that it has been quite a while since The Honeys have recorded together.
“California Feeling”
Stephen Kalinich: “California Feeling” by The Honeys knocks me into euphoria…I love it. They capture the inviting inspiring part of California. I love the harmonies and their voices only get better. They bring the song to life in a magical way. I can feel the sun in the notes they sing and the feeling of openness and warmth that California can offer; it sounds like a more innocent time, but a time needed now more than ever…a time of hope. The Honeys have hope in their voice. I am blessed to have their sweetness and goodness on the album.
Q: Out of all of Stephen's poems and songs what inspired you to choose your track?
Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford: Stephen asked me if we could sing it for his album, and I said, How about if The Honeys do it? Stephen was thrilled!
Q: What inspires you the most about Stephen's writing?
MWR: His soulful passion for humanity and a world full of love and peace.
Q: What part of the recording process was the most challenging?
MWR:There were a few background parts that were very challenging, and Alan Boyd was so helpful being familiar with the sound and helped create the right parts with us.
Q: What part of the recording process was the most enjoyable?
MWR: Working with Mark Linett and Alan Boyd was truly fun and incredibly professional. They let The Honeys be themselves and respected our passions for the way we work and sound. Stephen and Daniel were also there and gave their inspiring support. It was wonderful.
Ginger Blake: This was one of my most joyous recording sessions when asked to do “California Feeling.” As a member of THE HONEYS, Stephen, who is my very dear friend and a most generous, compassionate, amazing composer, poet, asked if we would sing on his album. We were excited to do this song for many reasons, but mostly gratifying was to see Stephen's emotional expression when we were singing in the studio. It gave us such great satisfaction knowing how much he loved The Honeys version of “California Feeling” and how much he loved our bringing it to life. Stephen is a life source, filled with beams of passion, heart, love and talent. We will forever love him.
