The “holy grail of guitars” is just some of the hundreds of vintage acoustic guitars going up for auction in New York. Hank Risan from Santa Cruz, California, is a guitar collector who is putting some of his musical instruments up for auction by Guernsey’s on April 2 and April 3, according to an ABC News report on Friday.
Risan has some 265 pieces in his collection that are believed to be some of the finest of vintage guitars to be put on the auction block when one considers rarity, original construction and the condition of the products.
Also of note, many guitar manufacturers are within his collection, including Gibson, D’Angelico, Gretsch, Washburn, and Stromberg. His earliest specimen of instrumentation is dated back to 1840, while the latest instrument is a 2000 re-creation of a 1930 Martin masterpiece, an OM-45 Deluxe. The original and the re-creation will be part of the auction. Guernsey’s President Arian Ettinger states that the OM-45 Deluxe is the holy grail of guitars – as only 14 were ever made.
Risan is the founder of the virtual Museum of Musical Instruments and the CEO of Media Rights Technologies Inc. He has been collecting guitars since he was a teenager.
