The holiday season may lead to a positive learning environment

Long after the presents have been distributed around the tree, parents will have the task if they made the correct decision or were they a victim of the media hype. With the onset of the technology surge, the children had many electronic items on their Christmas wish list. There were other choices such as the Avengers craze and a host of television and movie shows that were usually depicted with subliminal messages of must have toys, games, dolls and all the accessories that seem to be an extra-added importance.

Within all the Christmas selections, the parents must always look for safety features. This includes the ubiquitous swords and Ninja's, missile projectiles, inflatables and all toys that have a multitude of pieces, which should carry a choking alert on the label. But, this isn't the main concern for being over protected and that belongs in the category concerning what the purpose of the gift really is all about.

It would be nice if the item was educational one that provides an ongoing learning experience. There are opportunities with electronic devices that teach children the basics of math, reading, science and most core subjects that have a great carry over from the classroom. The apps that can be utilized on Apple and Android operating systems are a wonderful way to involve the whole family. There is an amazing cross-over with rapid eye movement that is conducive to learn how to read, concentrate and establish patterns.

Not to be overlooked are the board games that show decision making skills, sharing with others and taking turns, which revolves around caring, respect and understanding rules. Musical gifts encourage confidence, free movement and creativity. Recreational and sports-related items stipulate teamwork, motor skills, balance and hand-eye coordination.

Christmas may be over and the wrappings, tissue paper and assortment of boxes are cluttered in all confines of the house; it may be necessary for parents to kick back and evaluate the thought behind what is important. The first order of business is safety, and that should be followed by educational tools that the children can use along with skills learned in the classroom.

The availability of the Iphone, Ipad and Google devices will last much longer and provide a positive learning environment. Apple has Itunes U, where students can engage in a plethora if free classes from major universities. There are pod casts to learn about a variety of subjects and commentaries. One of those apps is called Grammar Girl, which demonstrates correct usage of words and their meanings.

The bottom line with this topic is how parents can help their children decide what is important, and that includes safety, education, respect for others, sportsmanship and a life-long interest in learning. It comes in many forms and long after the gift-giving episodes are completed, or in the process of taking place, it must be understood that education is the key to learning and the holidays is the perfect time to purchase items that are meaningful and have a carry-over value for many years to come.
