'The Hobbit' tops box office on final weekend of 2013

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ survived five Christmas day newcomers to top the box office on the final weekend of 2013, according to industry figures released Monday.

The fantasy sequel based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved novel grossed $29 million in ticket sales, enough to win its third straight weekend at theaters. ‘Smaug’ has earned a total of $189.4 million since opening Dec. 13.

Disney’s animated 3D comedy adventure ‘Frozen’ moved up one spot to No. 2 in its sixth weekend, earning $28.6 million for a total of $248.1 million since opening in limited release Nov. 22.

Comedy sequel ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ starring Will Ferrell dipped one spot to No. 3 in its second weekend, earning $20.5 million for a total of $83.6 million since opening Dec. 18.

Crime drama ‘American Hustle’ stayed at No. 4 for a second straight weekend, earning $19.5 million for a total of $60 million since opening in limited release Dec. 13.

Five films opened on Christmas day, but only The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio finished in the weekend’s top five. The Martin Scorsese drama earned $18.5 million for a total of $34.3 million since Christmas.

Ben Stiller comedy ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ opened at No. 7 with $12.7 million and a total of $25.3 million since Christmas.

Keanu Reeves samurai action drama '47 Ronin’ debuted at No. 9 with $9.9 million and a total of $20.6 million since Christmas.

Sports comedy ‘Grudge Match’ starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone opened at No. 11 with $7 million and a total of $13.1 million since Christmas.

Justin Bieber music documentary ‘Believe’ debuted at No. 14 with $2 million and a total of $4.2 million since Christmas.
