Originally scheduled for a summer release, New Line Cinema has rescheduled the opening day for “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” According to a Feb. 28 report from TheOneRing.net, the new release date is Dec. 17, 2014. This makes it consistent with the pre-Christmas releases for the other films in the series and the “Lord of the Rings” franchise.
“The Hobbit: There and Back Again” will be competing against two family-friendly films. One is a spinoff of “Despicable Me,” and the other is a Pixar release titled “Tomorrowland,” from director Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”).
The majority of the three “Hobbit” films has already been shot with “pick-ups” scheduled for May. Those could last for several weeks or months.
The first film in the series, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” has grossed $300 million in the United States and almost $1 billion worldwide. The second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” is scheduled to be released on Dec. 13 this year.
