'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' is No. 1 for third week at U.S. box office

For the third weekend in a row, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (the second "Hobbit" movie in the series) was at No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Dec. 29, 2013. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Dec. 29, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (which was released in IMAX and 3-D) had $29.85 million in ticket sales in the movie's second weekend. The movie has been getting mixed-to-positive reviews from critics.

Meanwhile, as previously reported, Paramount Pictures' "The Wolf of Wall Street" was the highest debut of the five movies that opened in wide release on Dec. 25, 2013. "The Wolf of Wall Street" (starring Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life stock swindler Jordan Belfort) debuted at No. 5, with $18.5 million in ticket sales.

The other movies that opened in wide release on Christmas Day 2013 did mediocre-to-poor business at the box office:

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" — $13 million, No. 7 debut

"47 Ronin" — $9.9 million, No. 9 debut

"Grudge Match" — $7.3 million, No. 11 debut

"Justin Bieber: Believe" — $2 million, No. 14 debut

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Dec. 29, 2013:

1. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" — $29.85 million

2. "Frozen" — $28.8 million

3. "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" — $20.15 million

4. "American Hustle" — $19.5 million

5. "The Wolf of Wall Street" — $18.5 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Dec. 20, 2013:

  • "August: Osage County" — $179,500 from five theaters
  • "Lone Survivor" — $92,500 from two theaters (expanding to more theaters on Jan. 10, 2014)
  • "The Invisible Woman" — $37,100 from three theaters
