The new trailer for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” was just released. In this trailer, director Peter Jackson introduces the elements that bring the story of “The Hobbit” to its conclusion.
Jackson’s film serves as a conclusion to many years of work with J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth saga. In “The Hobbit” film series Jackson has introduced many elements that did not appear in Tolkien’s original story. From the trailer, it is unclear if Jackson will resolve the fate of Tauriel, the elf-warrior character he created. It is also unclear how many members of Thorin Oakenshield’s original company will survive the final battle. Some people have speculated that Jackson might have Thorin survive, even though he did not survive the battle in the book.
Jackson what had been a whimsical children’s book and turned it into an epic similar in scope to his “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Even the Dark Lord Sauron himself makes a brief appearance at the end of the trailer.
This movie trilogy has been very popular, and the legions of fans don’t mind how very different the movies are from Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” It seems like Jackson and the studios that produced the film series missed an opportunity to produce a charming and enchanting movie that was truer to the original source material. “The Hobbit” is such an engaging story that it could have been the basis of a true film masterpiece which could have rivaled “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in popularity and quality. It could have been a classic fantasy film for the ages.
Peter Jackson had originally wanted to make “The Hobbit” before he made “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy but was unable to obtain the film rights for the story. It probably would have been very different from the epic action/ adventure style fantasy he has created with “The Hobbit” trilogy. At any rate, “The Hobbit” film series has legions of die-hard fans who are very pleased with the story, they are enjoyable movies, and they're making money.
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is bound to be a big success at the box office when the film opens for the big holiday movie season. The release date for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is December 17 in the U.S.
