Last night, the Hive hosted a successfully packed opening reception for artist JB Snyder’s new work “Closure.” The event boasted an exhibition of Snyder’s mural pieces and smaller take-home sized works that truly spoke to the quality and talent of the artist, mood setting music DJ’d by Mike Cause and Just Chris, free booze, and surprisingly, free chili. Given the success of the show, and the invitingly and artistically inspiring vibe of the gallery itself, it seems fitting that we explore all that the gallery has to offer the downtown Phoenix area.
The Hive, opened in January 2011, is located in the middle of the Greater Coronado neighborhood of downtown Phoenix, and seems to be in its very nature, a living, breathing amalgam of the voices and spirit of the area. Moving through the gallery space is like moving through a story; each wall and each room speaking with a unique voice. The gallery features art in almost every genre, created by local artists who are striving to make a name for themselves, or to expand upon an already established reputation. The art featured by the gallery changes monthly, with opening receptions on the third Friday of the month from 7:00-10:00pm.
While it is a perfect moldable palette for local artistic talent, the Hive is also a coffee bar, studio space, bike shop, micro nursery, up cycle wood shop, sewing studio, and resale boutique. There is truly something there for everyone.
The Endless Seam sewing studio at The Hive is open to the public, offering resources and instruction for all experience levels and projects. Open studio hours are Sundays from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. With questions about studio time or upcoming workshops, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mud Dauber Coffee at The Hive offers fine coffee and teas to gallery patrons Monday through Sunday from 7:00 – 4:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am to 2:00 pm. For more information about Mud Dauber Coffee, please visit their website, HERE.
Zoo Micro-Nursery at The Hive is an awe-inspiring wonderland of native plant life. The diversity of plant life and pieced-together beauty of the arrangement makes one realize the true beauty that is created by the desert landscape that we call home. Explore your creative side at Sketch Book Sundays in Zoo Micro Nursery behind the gallery. Every Sunday, the Zoo welcomes local creative to share their ideas, build furniture out of their stockpiles of repurposed wood scraps, water the plants, or just sit, chat, and enjoy the DJ music.
