Eventually NM 518 will end at the intersection of NM 68 and you will be in Ranchos de Taos. Three miles north on NM 68 will take you into Taos proper. Along the way enjoy the grand view of Lobo Peak, the Taos ski basin, and other landmarks of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Once your explorations of Taos are done head south on NM 68. After passing through some relatively uniteresting high-desert terrain the road winds delightfully along the edge of the Rio Grande River. This aquatic close encounter lasts for about 14 miles coming to an end just north of the little community of Alcade.

A few miles further south merge on to NM 84/285 for the short ride back into Santa Fe. This ride is well worth the trip and can be made over and over and there is always something new to see. Try it in different seasons too!
